not to criticize, but I thought killboard links were not ok in NQ&A. I know that ShahFluffers' post wasn't engaging in bragging by any means, so has the policy changed, or was I misinformed all along? Or is it just bragging that is discouraged?

iirc: killboard links are verboeten anywhere except Crime and Punishment.

this particular instance is probably a case of 'moderator discretion' at work. note the first sentence of the post: "ShahFluffers copy-paste skillpoint spiel", they've posted that before. Also note: they were all HIS losses, not someone else.

Just as a caveat I don't overheat so this is purely EFT warrioring for me but I found it interesting.

I overheat, a lot.

I think this is a situation where the actual in-game benefit is greater than the math-warrioring may indicate. It seems to me that higher levels of thermo cut down on the splash damage generated by modules as well as the direct damage.

In any case, it's something I'm quite glad I trained to V (and the Manticore save was last January, not five years back.....).

I use overheat more as an "oh ****" measure rather than a common practice. I agree with you on the EFT warrioring though. EFT gives you a rough idea of whats possible but that little extra may make a bit of difference with ( player) skill and experience. Someone that overheats a lot knows ( probably) how to get the most out of pushing it to the edge.

However i still do not think the long trains are worth the benefit until much later on in the game. I think training other shorter skills will in most cases give you more of an edge then thermo V.

Sometimes you are the squirrel and sometimes you are the nut. Today, you are the nut and the squirrel is hungry.

fair enough.

I'm possibly a little weird in how i trained up. I'm closing in on 30m SP with under 4m in Ships, Gunnery & Missiles combined. Meanwhile there's 5.5m in Nav, 5m in Engineering, 4m and counting in Drones.....

There are times that the difference between modules overheating for 40 seconds and 43 seconds will win or lose a fight, but they are incredibly few and far between.

I think the opposing argument is that such moments may be few and far between, but if you get one (1), it stays with you and your reputation forever. Case in point "I saved a Manticore against all odds 5 years ago" or w/e.

Thing is there's other skills that also give 1-2% edges in combat (like Large Blaster Specialization 5), and it's basically impossible to tell which one of the 1-2% edges was decisive. Especially when one of them is probabilistic.

Thermo 5 is ~3% more overheat time than Thermo 4, which is about 1% more performance on offence (0.5% from damage, 0.5% from precision) and about 2% more performance on defense, under the assumption that you are overheating early in the fight.

Large Blaster Specialization 5 (or the same for a different weapon system) is 2% more performance on offense and is pretty universally considered 'not worth training until you have basically everything'. I use blasters a lot and don't have any of the specializations to 5 (all three are at 4).

OTOH there are long trains that offer much more of a performance boost. Advanced Weapons Upgrades 5 comes to mind, as does any tech 2 ship class you use extensively.
