The investigation has been ended.

Introduction

I first began playing EVE around mid 2006 but haven’t played seriously since 2007. My knowledge of 0.0 is almost non-existent and yet I find the politics of EVE to be one of the most fascinating aspects of the game.

Therefore I will be flying into the depths of space with nothing but a trusty shuttle to visit and talk with each alliance. I want to find out what motivates them, what their experiences are, what defines the game for them, what cool things they have done and most importantly, who are they trying to kill? Essentially, what is 0.0 all about?

I’m hoping that new players will find this interesting and educational, high-sec players will get an insight into how the ‘other half’ live and the 0.0 players get to talk about themselves, their alliances and share their passion. So we begin…

Chapter 1: The North East

Featuring: Imperial Legion, United Pod services, Raiden, Rolling Thunder, Northern Coalition, Northern Associates, White Noise, Razor and other personalities

Part 1

First off I moved to a low sec system on the borders of 0.0 and created a friendly sounding corporation that would reassure players and provide information about my endeavour
http://eve-files.com/dl/250369

Then a nice friendly biography that was sure to interest any passing pilot.
http://eve-files.com/dl/250370

I fired up the influence map to pick out my first destination. I wanted to start with smaller alliances while I established myself and my investigative techniques. Geminate looked attractive and I had actually been based there for a while back in 2007 – A fitting place to return to.
http://eve-files.com/dl/250372

In Geminate reside: Imperial Legion, United Pod Service, Solar Fleet and Solar Wing. I set the autopilot and began my adventure, I was so excited that I resolved to interview the first person I came across.

Imagine my luck, when in the first system I had the choice of not one pilot… but two!
http://eve-files.com/dl/250373

Truly fate had smiled upon me this day, my journey was blessed with good fortune and I knew myself to be on the right path. I greeted the pilots.
http://eve-files.com/dl/250375

Truly, it is difficult to screenshot movement, in the same way it is difficult to screenshot the lack of movement. For a lack of movement is what I had in my chat window. I was distraught; they had ignored me! But my mother always told me that a man who gives up is not a true man – and I am a true (wo)man! I was foolish to think that I could stroll into 0.0 and the galaxies denizens would flock to me with tales of valour and yarns of epic wars. It seems obvious in hindsight that a bucket load of perseverance and a cup load of journalist guile would be required for me to achieve my aims.

You have to take the scorn.
http://eve-files.com/dl/250376

And guess wildly.
http://eve-files.com/dl/250377

Consider that they may just be winding you up.
http://eve-files.com/dl/250378

Deal with rejection.
http://eve-files.com/dl/250380

Lower your standards.
http://eve-files.com/dl/250381

And then deal with it when they just stop talking to you.
(Once again, it’s hard to screenshot nothing happening.)

I did meet this nice chap while searching for some Imperial Legion members to talk to. He was very nice, if a little uninformed about the capabilities of his hardware, but he did point me in the right direction of the Imperial Legions base of operations. Finally, progress.
http://eve-files.com/dl/250382

I entered the system and led straight in with my honed technique of enticing pilots to spill the beans.

http://eve-files.com/dl/250387

Well. Not exactly as planned. I did manage to grab a picture of the station though. I tried to elicit some information one last time as I took a daredevil, point-blank-range fly by shooting of their station.
http://eve-files.com/dl/250388
“Welcome to null” indeed, would this be the running theme of my adventures?

But, as I jumped out of the system in search of a more receptive audience, something most heart warming happened…

Very interesting, I like the roleplay aspect. You can detect a slight amount of paranoia in some of the residents too :)

This is the first EVE-O Thread I've felt worth of subscribing to via RSS. Congrats! I await the results of your (mis)adventures eagerly.

It's called "0.0" for reason...

If she went south, she would need to have a cov ops t3 with an interdiction nullifier.

The stories I am sure would be more interesting in the south as they are fighting over comparatively worthless space. What motivations would they hold secret?

Also, the south is a damn warzone currently...

Thanks for the feedback guys. I appreciate it, especially as I already have about 6 posts worth of material.

Geminate - Yeah, I wanted to start with the smaller alliances while I estalished how I was going to approach the whole thing, lets me learn 0.0 a bit and get comfortable.

Video - I don't have the know-how or time for that, plus my laptop would literally combust if I tried it.

Paranoia - Oh yeah! It's fun, you get a lot of the "I'm not talking to you" but there are also some really cool people out there.

By the way, don't hang on your seats for updates. I don't want to post too often as I want to keep the forum posts quite some way behind my actual progress for various reasons (plus I'm insanely busy).

It will be a shuttle all the way, even if I just blog about how merciless the southern pilots are :)

Also, if I have already visited your alliance and you want to talk to me, feel free to drop me an EVE mail.

There is not the ‘other half’, less than a 5% players live in 0.0

Part 2

I was left dejected as I warped back to the gate; these vagabonds had ejected me from the system without firing a shot! I came in open eyed wonder, with a naivety fuelled by curiosity and they had just mocked me. No one wanted to talk to me.

I think I may have returned to empire had the next thing on my screen after jumping into the next system not been this:
http://eve-files.com/dl/250394

It is difficult to explain that feeling when your faith is restored, when that lone warm hand is extended from the faceless crowd. Truly Sean Kingst0n is a hero.

I think the excitement of civil conversation got to me and I began to babble at my saviour, but he rose to the challenge of my investigative diarrhoea and answered my questions. My first interview of the project! (All applaud!)
http://eve-files.com/dl/250395

We had to move into a private chat as some of the hostile vagabonds came into the system, no doubt to ridicule my project all over again. I ran away in search of some pilots from the United Pod Service.
http://eve-files.com/dl/250396

Meanwhile Sean had brought me up to speed on the local politics and so we moved onto his own experiences.
http://eve-files.com/dl/250397

I arrived safe and sound with the United Pod Service and yet their welcome left me with horrific flashbacks of a previous first meeting with a group of foul mouthed Vagabonds. Who did these jokers think they were? But as my mum once said, a man who cries in the face of danger is likely to be bullied by small girls; so I did not cry – I ignored them heroically.

Mr Shrapnel from Imperial Legion joined me for a little chat and voiced a little worry about participating in my interview. He needn’t have worried really…

http://eve-files.com/dl/250401

Here we interrupt the saga for the first moment I came face to face with a pilot in 0.0 (via the overview). It was a tense time while I waited for my shuttle to align and get to warp speed.
http://eve-files.com/dl/250403

During that frightful few moments my ability to accurately screenshot my interview utterly failed me. Between the first and second box Sharpnel talks about how they end up in some space somewhere and between the second and third he blames communication for the problem.

http://eve-files.com/dl/250407

http://eve-files.com/dl/250408
http://eve-files.com/dl/250410

As you can see, I had to force the information out like the last bit of toothpaste in the tube. I included all of it (except for that which I failed to screenshot) because it chronicles the dangers that smaller alliances face in the ever changing politics of EVE, plus, it was a huge story. But I enjoyed it, so you should too!

I finally got some sense out of the UPS pilots:
http://eve-files.com/dl/250409

Next time: I fly really close to a station and I find myself inside many gigantic bubbles!

I really like what you are doing and I'm really interested in more stories that you have collected.

This gives a real good impression of 0.0-Space and what it is like out there. I wasn't out in 0.0 yet, but I appreciate the stories and who knows ... maybe one day I'm heading out there, too. Smile
