Actually people do recognize you by your avatar, both in forums and in game. But until WIS, it's not nearly as fun as other games.

I actually have portraits turned off when ever possible.

But names are recognized. And my name sometimes proceeds me too (both positive and negative)

Yea, I didn't say everyone. But there are people, like me that do recognize people's portraits over their names.

My choice of pronouns is based on your avatar. Even if I know what is behind the avatar.

I have portraits turned off in local chat in-game to reduce loading times.

However, when I see a name I recognise, the first thing I do is Show Info to look at their portrait.

I use them to do a rough check on how the player rolls, so to speak.
Portraits can tell a lot, as most make no conscious effort and just let instincts create them.

Confirmation on my ticket-- portraits are functional again and changes should be coming through normally again soon, if not already.
