Process in becoming a Capsuleer?

As a stress relief from working at a hospital in real life, I write. I have decided that I was going to start writing a story about this character and her choice to become a capsuleer, and then follow throughout her career. Yes, I plan on this being a very long story. I have already began the first part of her decision to do so (already at 3200 words) but where can I find any information on how exactly one becomes a capsuleer and the process that is involved? I would like to write about her experience going through the process but not exactly sure how it happens.

I would like to keep the story in line with how CCP sees the process to become one so if anyone (or CCP) can show me information on how the process works, I would really appreciate it.

Thank you for your time and fly safe.

I always found this story quite interesting. Maybe it will help you out. Blink

Short version: Training alone takes several years, and eventually you let yourself be euthanized to wake up in a new, capsule ready body. That is the new lore.

Long version: Only 14% of those who apply get selected to basic training and of those 5% are expected to make it through the entire program.. You need to already be almost a perfect human being - perfect vision, very strict limits on blood pressure etc, able to run at least 60 kilometers without pause along with a very strict genetic profile with no particular hereditary diseases, you need to be very intelligent and relevant degree in some technical field and so on. There are several phases, one is the pre-screening mentioned above, second gets you the implants and the mental and physical tests along with actual capsuleer training which is where most fail and/or die, third and the last is the euthanasia phase which is where the last people often fail. I recall it has been called a formality in your last step to become a licensed capsuleer, and IIRC was never mentioned in the older lore.

Along with all of these you also need to be very very rich unless a govenrment or a huge corporation is footing the bill for you. During training many are expected to die. All in all the book learning and mental and physical conditioning takes around 5 years until you get to the euthanasia point and becoming a proper capsuleer.

A summary I wrote sometime ago on a similar topic also taken from Source. I hope it is useful.

Quote:
In Source a timeline is laid out as follows: Prerequisite testing (medical, IQ, and the requirement for a degree in a technical field) which doesn't seem to take too much time, "book-learning" phase (on capsuleer technology, running a ship and crew, maintenance, etc.) which lasts 1-2 years and ends with a six-hour oral exam, then physical training (implant installation, conditioning for space travel ["deprivation tanks, zero-G environments, and shock simulations"]) lasting two years, then two years of advanced command and technical training (one year flying simulations, one year capsule-fitted frigates), after this the final test is to voluntarily undergo euthanasia into a cloned body. So in total the training takes five to six years and requires a degree beforehand.

As to cost the Source only says "provided no grants or scholarships are in the picture, an enormous sum of money [is required]." We can assume that on top of the equivalent cost of a world class 5-6 year education there are also material costs (testing facilities, implants, ships) that add a substantial financial burden on top of what is required for traditional educational paths. Without a knowledge of income disparity in the Cluster it's hard to estimate how much the lifetime accrual of 10,000 ISK is actually worth and then to calculate what an advanced post-secondary education (really graduate or doctoral level education) would cost. However, knowing that capsuleer implants and small ships are required in the later stages of the process then we can assume that an absolute bottom cost for becoming a Capsuleer must be in the hundreds of thousands or millions of ISK. While out of reach of the majority of the population it is reasonable to assume that individuals that meet the physical and mental criteria will often have access to funding from national or corporate interests (considering the rarity of Capsule compatible individuals and their potential value).

EDIT: Also, remember that Source is a "snapshot" of the lore at the time it was written. So there is wiggle room on the details.

This video explains the process vaguely (starts at 2:00).

Thank you for all the information given. I am pretty sure I can take what was given and work around it. At about 8000 words (14 pages) and she still hasnt left the planet yet. This is going to be fun to write. Wish me luck...
