is a Nightmare ok for lvl 4 security missions

Yes

Especially if you are going up against blood raiders/sansha's, a bit less against guristas/serpentis/eom (works like a charm though), but not against angels. Mercs and Rogue Drones are also highly allergic to the nightmare's lasers..

However if you have the isk and skills I would personally recommend a Paladin, but I like to be more on the tanky than on the ganky side

NM would work for lv4s
a paladin is just overkill for missions (w/Bastion ofc)

Of course! Nightmare with good skills can pump around 1000 dps out of tachyons while retaining strong shield tank. You should beware Blood's capacitor warfare trough. Also Nightmare received sweat bonus to afterburner speed lately.

EoM shield tank and EM is their lowest or second lowest resist on shields. sure it is a bit ineffective vs their armor as EM tends to be highest there but for a 1000+ dps ship that will add maybe a few seconds to mission times, plus therm is one of their lower resists on armor.

Any BS with a good fit would be sufficient for lvl 4 missions.

This brings to mind a question, is it my imagination or did lvl 4 missions get easier? I had a break for a couple of years and just returned in Oct and find them much easier now...

It sounds plausible enough tonight, but wait until tomorrow. Wait for the common sense of the morning.

Yes, but recommend Paladin for Tracking Disruptor immunity (Bastion mode)

I don't believe so. While certain ships have certainly seen a buff in various areas (Marauders, Nightmares, Rattlesnake, Machariel, etc.) the missions themselves have had drone aggro and much more aggressive E-War changes made to them as well as loot nerf.

If you are looking for a challenge/getting the adrenalin pumping for a bit you should try out burners.
