trouble with Data Site Scanning mission

Hi all,

So I have begun exploration missions and I have just accepted a Data Site scanning mission (3 of 5) in Deepari II.

this is my briefing;

Data Site Scanning (3 of 5)

Mission briefing
Now you'll start scanning for each type of Cosmic Signature, something you can only do by using Core Scanner Probes.

First up is a Data site, and that means you need to fit to your ship the Civilian Data Analyzer you picked up earlier. Scan down the site with your Scanner Probes, find the container inside and hack it open with the Data Analyzer, then bring the results back to me. Your loot from Data sites will be useful for invention – a research process that produces blueprints for advanced Tech II ships and modules.

I have launched my probes near Deepari II but I do not know how to scan the results to find this container. I have fitted the Civilian Data Analyzer to my ship.

You must go into the map and move around and resize your probes (Blue spheres) to try and get a lock on a red sphere to bring it down to a point that is strong enough to warp to.

Whilst there's probably a good tutorial or two out there on Youtube, I'm going to try my hand at explaining it using a couple of hastily edited screen grabs;

If you haven't already, hit that little icon, the left of the 3 segments that pops up opens the probe scanner (or just hit alt-p).

Now, something that I always do is use the "Pinpoint" probe formation, it basically clusters the probes up for you and (from my experience) lets you scan practically everything you can get a lock on (skill limits not-withstanding). Hit that, then (assuming you have your probes launched) open up the map as indicated.

Now, I just took these screenshots from a random system, but as you'll be in a career agent system, you'll have a lot more Cosmic Anomalies/Signatures on the list. The blue spheres are your probes and the area they will cover once you hit the "Analyze" button, to move them simply drag them using up/down/left/right arrows, or you can do so via dragging them via the cube in the centre. If the arrows aren't showing up, hit left-shift once or twice.

Once you have them in a position similar to what I've shown above (it works on a 3D basis, so swivel the camera to make sure you aren't scanning above/below etc), hit Analyze, after a few seconds you'll be given a signal strength on the Cosmic Signature. You may find that you need to move the probes to cover the 'dot'. To get a 100% reading, you will typically need to narrow your probes down to increase the signal strength; to adjust the amount that they cover, simply drag any of the spheres on the outer edge (it can be a bit fiddly), and shrink the amount step by step, for example 8 AU -> 4, then 4 -> 2.

The only other thing that I can think of is that if you're having trouble focusing on scanning down 1 particular site, click it on the signature list in the probe scanner window, it should clear the other sigs/anoms off the map. Anyway, hope that helps. Smile

Well, I've never done hacking outside of the odd high/low sec site, but the basic principle is to get to the core by process of clicking along the various segments. To activate it, just have the container targeted, and activate the analyzer. You have overall health and an attack strength based on the analyzer, as well as bonuses if you use the right kind of ship. You have things like anti-viruses which can block progress + damage your virus' health, but then you also get utilities which can recharge your health/deal unreturned damage, to name but two.

Just a note of caution, the civvy analyzer is enough to get through the container in the career agents site, but for everything else out there in New Eden it won't even let you get to the mini-game; you'll need to train an hour or 2 to gain access to the T1 module.

Ah ok this all makes sense now. Many thanks for all the advice. It seems the problem was that I wasn't targeting the container. Such a simple thing to miss and yet makes all the difference.

So much to learn but I am liking this (and the community)

Eve is different in a lot of ways. In the begining it may seem like a bit much. However it does not take too long to get the basics down and feel somewhat comfortable with navigating through the game.

Don't get me wrong years from now you'll probably still feel like a noob. It's just that you can learn how to figure stuff out on your own pretty quickly. There's too much to Eve to be able to learn everything all at once. However just knowing where to go to find stuff out and some basic concepts like "if in doubt right-click" can go a long way.

As far as the targeting mechanics you'll become familiar with those rather quickly.

Its funny you should mention that lol. I have just been given a dual light beam laser and took a mission to try it out. However apparently I need a crystal to activate it??? I have a lot of angry ships outside of my station who want to put holes in me and I need to figure out how to get one of these crystals. Any ideas?

Feeling rather stupid at the moment haha

"When in doubt right-click"

If the crystals ( or any other ammo for that matter assuming you have the right stuff for your weapons ) is in your cargohold and you are in space you can right click on your guns and load what ever type of ammo you have, assuming it is appropriate ammo.

Proper ammo means right type and right size. So lazors take crystals, rails and blasters use hybrid ammo, autocannons and artillery use projectile ammo. Further small guns need small ammo and medium need medium and large need large etc...
So if you have small lazors you just need small crystals in your cargohold and you can load them.

Things become a little more complicated when you start grouping weapons but we'll not go there just yet.

In station you can just drag and drop the ammo into the weapon. Again assuming it is appropriate ammo type and size.
