Would you keep playing EvE if CCP some how lost all your player data?

They've posted screenshots and dev blogs of what their server hardware looks like, AND a summary of the work done to recover from the recent hard disk failure. Given the types of hardware and the level of tech support involved, it's pretty much impossible for CCP to lose the database with no backups.

So, to answer your question, if they do lose the database as you imagine, no I wouldn't play again, because:

- extreme incompetence on their part
- no guarantee that they won't lose the new database again

You're very much insulting CCP by presenting this scenario as a possibility.

Now, if you're asking about a hard reset on purpose, or EVE II, or a new server, I probably would, based on the merits of the new game (if EVE II) or the merits of having a new server.

If it happened to everybody all at once, then oh yes. That would be interesting.

Edit: I don't have nearly the time invested in the game as others do, though, so that definitely makes a difference.

It would only happen when disastrous events hit both London data center and Iceland headquarter at the same time and destroy all hardware in both sides completely. I can only imagine an asteroid the size of Texas hit Earth will cause catastrophic lost over such wide geographical region. If that really happens, the least I care about would be whether I can play an online game or not.

A new server with zero existing assets and everyone starting at 500k sp or whatever the baseline is right now would be amazing imo.

Sending us into the Iron age (stone ageRoll), well perhaps not that far back... but people would sure act rather odd without technology that we have invented in the last 100years.Shocked

"My little box of tricks should be about somewhere, but where did i put it...!!!." , Fudges about in my attic for my:

E-bomb (electromagnetic bomb)
EMP (electromagnetic pulse)
Nanites
Solar Flare's (my snow globe has many Solar Flare's)
Messing about with Loop quantum gravity (LQG) Shocked
Nut Spread
Cherry Coke
AFK Hamsters

EVEBoard ...Just over 60million skill points, each skill was chosen for a reason. I closed my eyes & clicked another skill to train... "BINGO...!!!" ... "This time i got something usefull"

So, to continue the discussion, assume for a second that the few answers in this thread are proportionally representative of the entire player base. A few people have said they'd continue playing, others have said they would not.

Thus, if this is representative of what the playerbase would actually do, then resetting the servers to 0 would result in the loss of a significant chunk of players. At least 30%, judging by the tally of this thread so far.

In reality a lot more people would quit.
In essence it would not only be based on the decision if a player would want to start from scratch with their characters, but also a matter of trust in CCP. Who would want to trust a company that manages to lose all player data from the past 12+ years? They've done it once at that time, what if it happens again? Is it worth the renewed time investment in light of that risk?

Luckily for us CCP does have backups. I am very, very glad the question this discussion is based upon is a hypothetical one. Big smile

Here I used to have a sig of our old Camper in space. Now it is disregarded as being the wrong format. Looking out the window I see one thing: Nothing wrong with the format of our Camper! Silly CCP......

Very well put, it is exactly what I meant by "annoying" I respect being a newb and progressing through content while you train. However waiting to do things you've already done doesn't really make for interesting game play imo.

I can think my prime example. I got heavy leadership and command skills. but I trained that here on solo character to actually fly command fit ships in fights. The day I got FCV was absolutely exhilarating! But two years of training again to get to that place? I just couldn't do it again...

There is one very, very important thing that would happen that i think everyone would agree would be amazing. You know those stations you dock in? those stations you drop any and every thing you've looted from wrecks/cans/roids? You know those stations that when you open your asset tab and just see thousands upon thousands of useless mods and other junk scattered around.

No more looking at all that trash and thinking 'i really should clean all this up one day, this weekend i am going to go to these stations and clean this stuff out' but you never do and the blight that is thrash tier modules that aren't even worth selling that continue to stock pile in stations because you'd rather be out looking for content then cleaning up your inventory tab, just stay there accumulating and multiplying waiting for the moment to take over the world. . .

Anyway a free trash tier module asset clean out. hells yes \o/

I'd say no but 3 months later I'd be bored and looking at the sci fi MMO market there aren't a lot of options.

EVE would be fine even if we all had to restart. It would just take half a year for us all get bored and come back like we always do after we quit.

Well no flying a titan at full gear cost allot and time. So for me no. And tbh thats why there is "progress" to start back is no fun. I hate the area when i was young and can no do squad and get killed all the time. Nah sorry i do not miss those times.

After 12 years theres no way Id do it. Having to wait for content again? Yeah no. Equal footing? Yeah no. Everyone with experience still has it over anyone else, everyone with friends and organizational chains has that still over everyone else. Its not the idea of whoring stuff or isk again, its the raw wait times for the skills to do stuff thatd drive me batty. Having gone through it enough yeah no thatd be worse than watching grass grow and everytime u go to sleep someone would cut it on you.

The first time you do it your not waiting for something you know of. Every other time you now know exactly what your waiting for, the pleasure and joy of the unknown is gone from it. Its like waiting for Christmas or a Bday when you know everything your getting and its the same as it was every other year for a decade or more. Yeah its not fun at all.

this, i'd play but it'd ***** about it the entire time. Because i already know how to do stuff, and waiting years to get right buck here again would suck.

Its why i hope i don;t suffer a stroke or get altimeters and have to relearn to do **** all over again. it would be frustrating as hell.

But all the current coalitions would exist with there exact networks in place, so nothing would change really. thats what people fail to understand.
