I have a trading char who is doing a lot of work between some mission hubs and Jita and i'm trying to decide which blockade runner and deep space transport would best suit his needs. I am not very keen on getting a freighter at this point, so leave that out of the equation.

I like a prowler - you can fit a covert cloak, get through just about anywhere if you have bookmarks.

Additional suggestion - and I'm not with them, but I've used their services - if you're moving large quantities of stuff, have you considered using a shipper, such as Push Industries? They'll do full freighter runs between Rens and Jita for under 10M, which is a small price for a full freighter load, and they're pretty fast.

I've used them twice and it's worked great.

I have used contract services including the frog team and some others for large-scale arbitrage and I agree they're a good deal for someone who never wants to worry about his own freighter (I'm certainly in that category). However, my current needs are on a smaller scale and simply a little too high in value to continue using t1 industrial ships. They are also a bit of a trade secret and I wouldn't want to set up a chain of contracts to one of my favorite hubs (where very few traders seem to have taken notice).

Orcas also work, with their 40k m3 of unscannable cargo space. And if you're doing low volume, high value, then the Blockade Runners and Covops frigs work well for that.

Caldari industrials suck major balls. Not able to fit, not able to carry. Tech 2 included.

Gallente industrials are very capable, can fit for cloaking. Can load extra cargo. 2nd largest with rigs.

Amarr industrials are average. Largest t2 industrial carry volume with rigs.

Minmatar - fastest to skill up, very agile. Blockade runners are fast, regular industrials are cheap and versatile.

itty 1, itty 2, itty 3, itty 4, itty 5 - this is excessive.

bafger 1 badger 2 - this sucks, as common as achura face

This post sums up why the 'best' work with DCM inc.

WARP DRIVE makes eve boring

really - add warping align time 300% on gun aggression and eve becomes great again

For sheer cargo space, the best of the non-capital industrials is the Iteron V, followed by the Impel. No tank though, so enjoy being suicided by Tornadoes.

For high-ish value cargo in HS/LS/0.0: Prorator (best slot layout for k-space work)
If you need a blockade runner in W-space: Prowler (can fit covert cloak & core probe launcher)
For very-high-value cargoes in any space: Blockade running covert Tengu
For very-high-value cargoes in HS: Orca corp hangar

Deep Space Transports (the tanky T2 industrials) are rarely used, despite their large cargo holds, as they have poor survivability against truly "heavy" tackle setups (i.e. anything more than 1 ship in most cases) outside of hisec. You might be able to get some mileage (light-year-age?) out of, say, an Impel or an Occator in hisec, however, it won't beat the Orca when it comes to lowering your gank profile.

Thanks folks. I thought I had read somewhere the orca's hanger was now scannable (perhaps that was by concord), but if that isn't the case, it sounds like I need an orca.

Definitely. Fit a 100mn MWD to it and you can move it around as fast as any BS (well, except for slightly longer spent slowing down to align for the first gate after undocking) with a good tank, a secure compartment, an SMA for some extra ships and a very large normal cargo.
