War reporting vs. dot mania

EVE is gloriously beautiful, and the scope and scale of its fights and wars are unparalleled, from a one-on-one frigate duel to thousands of ship locked into battle with Titans on the field.

Too bad all one typically sees of this - in game videos - is some dots swarming about at a distance, from a window filled to the brim with controls and lists, some of which are typically covered by static pictures to hide player identities etc.

What I think EVE needs to fix this is ... professional war reporters. People who are not themselves fighting, but instead try to capture the best and most exciting footage of the fighting.

What's to discuss about that? Well, whether one could make this work somehow, on a technical and social level.

Is a dedicated "war reporter" something that at least large groups would consider fielding? Could they agree beforehand to not to kill one or more reporters flying about? Or is it perhaps even a viable business plan for a dedicated corporation, i.e., we record the footage for you, you pay us in game with ISK for handing it over to you (raw or edited) out of game?

And what sort of ship would one fly to do the recording? Could there be a dedicated reporting ship (say a frigate that is near impossible to hit, but which has zero cargo space and no weapons)? Or will that just lead to uncontrollable abuse (people using the war reporter ship to escape places they shouldn't be able to get out of)?

The new camera system should help. But how realistic is it to have (war) reporting as a profession in EVE?

I'd totally kill the other fleet's reporter first so my team would win the Youtube war.

Interesting idea. Maybe CCP could create or allow to be created...

1. A single "War Correspondent" slot for a corporation.

2. Pilot would be able to fly a frig class ship only. All slots disabled for any modules that are combat related. Rigs and module slots for speed, maneuvering, and warp only.

3. Cargo bay disabled to prevent abuse ( yeah, hauling those BPO's and plex )Cool

4. Piloted ship invulnerable to targeting, bubbles, system effects, etc.

5. 12 hour limit on "status" to prevent camping a character in slot. 24 hour cool down period before assuming slot again.

and who knows what else. Probably some code issues to overcome ( not my area of expertise ). Not a totally out of the ball park idea though.

Civil discourse is uniquely human. After all, when is the last time a pride of lions and a herd of water buffalo negotiated SOV over a watering hole? Never. Someone either gets their ass kicked or eaten. At the end of the day someone holds SOV.

Not into that idea. Real life correspondents have to know how to handle themselves in a war zone; I don't see why it should be different in EVE.

Sometimes, the streamer known as DaOpa covers big events live and he simply does it from a cloaky ship.

More serious than funny with regard to this interesting idea.

There just isn't anything that can be said!
