EVE General Discussion

Last game of this nature I enjoyed it was a pleasure to read my first post years later and chuckle at my naiveté and it helped quell the keyboard smashing rages :) So this shall be my happy place for the foreseeable future

First hour pottering about and discovering the excitement of locking onto a rock. Up pops a private chat request. A shiver runs through me as I'm expecting destruction and connivance, even in high sec space.

Nope, just ten minutes of pleasant chat, a bit of advice and then off I pop to cook dinner.

Figuring out how to refine and sell the ore I find the wallet button. Said player had chucked 15m isk at me. How jolly nice and unexpected.

This leads to questions:

I don't want to pee this (small amount to exp. players but seems huge to me) up the wall so what at this stage (day 1) do I need to do to? Clones anywhere? I have no real progress to save so is there a point?

Do I buy a frigate to do the first career missions or use starter ship and wait for gift ships?

Join a corp like "Virgin" right now or wait till I have done missions? I'm eager to do this because the whole point seems to be experiencing this with other people and dragging yourself from high sec to the big wide universe out there...

And dying horribly at the hands of a gloating fourteen year old in a sweaty act of Karmic rebalancing for all the times I've set homework prior to football matches/bonus, patch or release weekends on their favourite games/purely on the basis that I had to put up with it so those little darlings can enjoy it as well.

Just a little attempt to balance out the whiney posts with some light and warmth :P. If you have any suggestions for corps other than eve uni (very good place but I am aware of it) feel free to post below. I have ts3 and a magnificent history of shooting the wrong thing whilst going to the wrong place.

Welcome to the game. I hope you find years of enjoyment and become one of us. It's not the bad community it's made out to be. That's the reputation we enjoy, but most players are just regular people you'll find anywhere.

There are 2 types of tutorials, the opportunities thingy and the old career agents (hit f12 ingame and there should be an option for them if you can't access them). The old ones should give you enough ships to complete the tutorials so no need to buy one for them.

With reference to joining a corp; yes you should do it, but be aware that there are terrible corps out there and some of them exploit newbies with tax and the like. Do the tutorials, then the SoE epic arc for some extra cash and get a feel for the basic game mechanics while you look around for a home.

With your magnificent history of shooting the wrong thing whilst going to the wrong place you should fit in well here.

If you join a player corp they will probably equip you.

If you want to go solo while thinking about who to join:

CAREER AGENTS

Military Career mission 2 gives a T1 combat Frigate (so does military 10)
Industry career mission 2 and Business Career mission 2 both give free venture mining frigates
Business Career mission 10 gives a free Industrial T1 hauler
Final Exploration Career mission gives a probing T1 Frigate
Advanced Military mission 10 gives you a free T1 Destroyer

You can actually complete these missions 12 times once at each of 12 schools for 12 free destroyers 12 free Industrials etc etc if you can be bothered flying all over EVE and doing all 12 schools (most people could not be bothered).


THEN do the Sister Epic Arc for 10 mill total profit enough for a cruiser.

THIS WILL B DEALT WITH

First: It's worthwhile to do all the career missions. Not because they're representative of what it's like to live in New Eden, but because they will help familiarize you with the user interface. You'll get a few ISK and ships out of the career agents, too.

Second: Congrats, you lucked into an excellent starter corp. One so excellent that I and many other players in the game are still extremely active in it. (Some even for ten+ years.) As stated earlier, CAS Does Stuff(tm). CAS has players who mine together, live in a wormhole together, run missions together, live in nullsec together... If you find a group of players you get along with and want to join their corp, by all means do so. But if you want to try out a few different playstyles before committing to anything, post up in CAS corp chat that you're new and looking for stuff to try - somebody will be able to help you achieve that. (There are trolls of course, but hopefully you can handle yourself around them. :) )

Personally, I'm part of the permanent nullsec fleet. I don't spend a lot of time in corp chat, but if you want to try some PvP perhaps I'll see you around, eh? o7 (I spent about a month on my own when I first started playing and was getting pretty bored until, after some searching, I found out about the nullsec fleet. It's those players I fly with who got me hooked on the game and keep me logging in.)

I can see by your name you're a Douglas Adams fan. Good start there. Finding the humor is one of the fun parts of this endeavor. Since many noobs will likely read this thread, I won't BS here like I usually do in other threads.

DO the tutorials. (Allow me to repeat that.) Do the tutorials.

Don't listen to the cool kids that say, "Aw, you don't have to do tutorials. Just play!" One reason is, a lot of cool kids say that then look for these people with little clue to the game just to GANK THEM! So, remember,
the wolf advised Red Ridinghood.

After you do the tutorials, including the advanced set, go to Arnon and do Sisters of EVE.

While you're doing all this keep an eye out for social contacts. If you luck out quick and get into a player-run corp, don't let the epeen strokers divert you from the above goals, DO THE TUTORIALS, DO SISTERS OF EVE.

When you have that stuff done, you'll be oriented enough, with enough munny and ships, to make decisions.

Google is your friend. Type "EVE _________" for whatever you're curious about. You'll be AMAZED.

Use your ingame browser. Read your info panels. (Only ask in a chat window if those two fail, which will be never.)

EVE players like to lie. The first rule here is not "have fun." It's "trust no one." That's for a reason, not to be cute.

If you do the tutorials, you end up with a crapload of starter ships, a good skills foundation and a happier wallet. Also some experience in a few aspects of the game.

That being said, joining a good, active corp is also important as other pilots will be able to teach you things that the npc's never will.

select show Career agents... go do all of them, then join a corporation..

Before joining a corporation, ask what they will do for you. Once in, hold them to their promises or leave. Are they saying free ships/skills for rookies? Make sure you get the ships and books. Are they saying nightly roams? If 4 days pass and no roams, ask what's up.

Don't be entitled, you are still the new guy, but do indeed mention you were told X would happen and it hasn't. Tons of corporations are directionless entities that eventually fade out or worse are just tax collection points for other players. Don't be in one of these. Make sure your Corp Leader logs in semi-regularly. Make sure the group does stuff together. Make sure the goals of the corp as your goals. (Actually make sure the corp HAS goals)

Goals are key to EVE. Very key. There is no natural progression path so you have to make it up yourself. It could be to fly a battleship in PVP. It could be to kill an officier rat. It could be mine 10,000,000,000 Tritanium. It could be to construct a supercapital. It could be to form the next superpower. All of these are possible but you need like minded people to help and guide you.
