Offer them stable incentive so that their investment of time can bear fruit.

It seems that EVE Online used to offer veterans some advantages over new players.
It seems that EVE Online systems changed and does not offer the same advantages to veterans over new players perhaps in the hopes of attracting more new players who may have felt vulnerable to veterans thus reducing their enrolment numbers per period.

Perhaps more players doesn't mean better.

However,
it is against how human brain function to disreguard hopes and try to link it with behavior result as both are connected.

Just because everyone decides to leave doesn't mean that there are no possibilities to fix this.
It is safe to say that EVE Online is not the oldest running model but that it has evolved many times.
I however say that it is the oldest online game running.

You could try creating alts and talking to yourself as a form of content creation, perhaps others would join you?

Make it so null sec alliances don't get completed crushed when they lose so you don't lose thousands of players at one time. And, make it so the best way to defeat your enemy is not to destroy their will to log in.

Failure cascades have been around longer than the number of players logged in have been decreasing, so I doubt this is a significant factor.

I'm thinking the problem is game development.
