A) Ignite my ore and take my attacker with me to a burning grave?

B) Deny my enemy any salvage?

C) Make a pretty explosion?

D) Let my collect on my insurance policy?

Seriously interested in the correct answer.

Thnx.

Well ... it seems to me that with Hulkageddon a regular feature of the game that Mining ships should ignite their ore resulting in an explosion equal to the amount and type of ore they are carrying. It should be dangerous to attack something filled with powder, that is how grain silos explode - all those single particles floating around.

And I caught a fragment of somebody saying that self destructing rather than being killed looses fewer skill points, HuH?

(obviously I am a n00b, but dont let that stop you from helping me out with some good answers.)

You only lose skill points from ship loss in Tech III ships.

Setting self destruct on your ship takes 2 minutes from activating it to the explosion. It doesn't take 2 minutes to suicide gank a Hulk.

Would be nice to be able to gank gankers with mining barges Lol

Powdered grain in a silo can explode because it is dispersed into an atmosphere, oxygen being key to the reaction. It can be assumed that the cargo hold of a mining ship would not be pressurized, so being in a powdered form probably would not make your ore more explosive so long as it is not dispersed in a gas with which it can react.

Perhaps in certain types of asteroid fields this could change, or if the field has been mined to a point that clouds of waste material form a temporary atmosphere... but then any combat activity would risk setting off the whole field making your self-destruct redundant.

I was recently running a lvl4 mission for pyrogypsum(?) and after the first mining cycle the asteroid exploded, the graphic changed to show a vapor field around the asteroid, and my mining drones were destroyed. So if THAT happens in the vacuum of space, them surely ore in a hold will go boom too, just have to have the right physics.

That could easily have been oxygen-containing rocks, or a pocket of flammable gases and oxygen.

When a nuke goes off only a percentage of the fissionable material actually turns into energy. And the ore is 'suspended' in the mining laser, so it seems that not all the ore would need to detonate, and the rest of the ore should merely 'burn'. However I still feel as though there should be a detonation of SOME magnitude considering the operation being performed, mining is Dangerous work.

Just eat some chilli before go mining and you'll see how dangerous mining is and how easy is to find very inflammable gases.

Well,

A) I'm sure the gankers care a whole lot about losing their Concord-doomed suicide gank ships to an ore explosion.

and B) if the explosion somehow, somewhere managed to pod the ganker, the resulting massive sec-status hit to the miner would drive them into the loving arms of the low-sec pirates. Hilarious, but sure to cause CCP a huge amount of pain in the petition and whine department.

So, sure, by all means, make the Ore explosive. Roll

This suggestion isn't very bright.

1) It usually take a min, usually less to suicide gank a miner. Your SD won't help in time.
2) Gankers don't care if you kill them.
3) If the explosion podded the ganker you will hit such a low status that moar miners will be forced to low sec with plenty of pirates waiting.

The real question is, why do you get an insurance payout for self destructing your ship?

A) Ignite my ore and take my attacker with me to a burning grave? - Apparently NOT!

B) Deny my enemy any salvage? - No answer on this one, how 'bout to do a Kirk and take out the Klingon Boarding Party? 3-2-1-BOOM!

C) Make a pretty explosion? - Granted.

D) Let me collect on my insurance policy? - Yeah, why does this work? Ever heard of Insurance Fraud?

So ... seems like a proper Self Destruct would leave NOTHING to be salvaged, after all, there seems to be no point to it if something is left over, the point is to completely destroy the ship, right?
