OK, so after researching this mess, I've come to understand that certain company was advertising walnut products as if they had drug-like effects on health conditions, and the FDA ruled that if those claims where true then those products should be considered drugs and be approved as such; and if the claims weren't true, then the product was being misbranded.

EU laws explicitly forbid to sell food as if it haves drug-like benefits. Food is food and drugs are drugs. The pseudo-medical mumbo jumbo of "food with health benefits" is sold as "dietary complements", which only need to prove that they aren't a health hazard (and not even directly i.e. the product is not tested, only need to deliver a ingredients list and if the ingredients are not a health hazard then the product is greenlighted).

So you have, FAI, yogurts that claim to "reduce colestherol", but they are sold along with other dairies in supermarkets and it's up to the consumer to trust that claim, since according to the law the only proven truth about those yogurts is that they are not a health hazard.
