Targeting range for your drones is exactly the same as targeting range for your ship, since it is the ship that locks targets not the drones.

Errrrrr. No. Drones actually lock people they are ordered to attack (just ask a friend to set drones on you if you don't believe me, you'll see drones redboxing you). They also have a scan resolution, which is used to calculate lock-time (fighter-bombers said hi). And drones control range is not the ship lock range. Someone need to be closer than [insert drone control range here] for you to be able to order your drones to attack him. Also, it is not the range in which it will follow someone. (As far as i know, once a drone is set to attack, there is no max range in which they would not be able to go from your ship.)

Without target lock you cannot order drones to attack, so it makes sense that you will see a red box when being attacked by drones.
The real question is that red box because of the drones or the ship controlling them?
Never been attacked by drones set to aggressive mode so you may be right and you get a red box from the drones themselves.

The scan resolution is required for you to be able to lock and attack any drones that are attacking you, so all by itself that is not proof that drones can or do lock their own targets. However given the way they work while in aggressive mode they must have some form of targeting. Even if we accept this as true and based on all available information their targeting range would still be limited to that of the controlling ship since the drones themselves have no targeting range listed in their specs.

You have to separate standard drones and fighters / bombers when dealing with control range issues.
Never flown a carrier but friends tell me that fighters and bombers only have targeting and range issues as a function of ordering them to attack. Once the order has been issued they will continue to follow and attack until they or their target is destroyed.
Standard drones on the other hand will fall idle and stop dead in space once they are beyond control range. And once idle in space they will stay that way until they are destroyed, pick up or you fly back into control range and reconnect to them.

Actually, if set to aggressive, drone will engage anyone that aggros you AFTER the drones have been launched.

This also works for breaking aggressive actions. IE, if any ship shooting you drops engagement, whenever they re-engage the drones will be triggered.
So, if there's a dps ship engaging you and he stops to reload, the drones will aggro when he starts firing again.
They will also continue to engage any hostile ship after that.

I understand all of these behaviors since I have been a drones pilot from day one, but how the drones respond was not the question so let me try this again from another angle.

A little basic info first to insure it is covered.
Your overview will give you and indicator that you are being, or have been targeted and another when the ship is shooting at you.

You attacked a ship that has drones set to aggressive mode so the drones are doing their thing and preparing to attack you.
Will you get an indicator on your overview that the drones are targeting you?
When they shoot you do you get an indicator on your overview?

I want to say yes. I believe they do go yellow then red, but I've never actually paid attention to that, so I could be wrong.
