Hi gang,

I'm working on figuring out the best way to set up a POS in 0.0 and doing some moon mining and reaction to help out my corp. My question is:

Can "general storage" silos be used just like the 'regular' silos? I can't seem to get a better definition for what "general storage" is, other than a vague "well, it's for general stuff" response.

Probably will end up using an Amarr medium tower, but a Caldari tower is looking more and more attractive, although fuel would be a ***** to get.

Answers and suggestions will be gratefully received. Smile

Whichever way you go, just make sure your tower isn't going to get a fleet of dreads dropped on it the second it finishes onlining.

FYI: Gallente towers seem to be the preferred for moon harvesting for the silo capacity bonus. I have no idea what the different types of Silo are.

You have done your homework on where you're placing this tower haven't you?

There is so much info on moon mining that is not published anywhere its amazing people ever got it to work...

There are many things to consider like; available fuel, relative safety of your space, amount of maintenance, and profitability. Assuming you are posting with the character you are going to doing this on I looked at a few of these options for you.

You guys are based in Providence so that means Amarr ice and fuel will be easier to procure. Anything else would need to be imported. You are only a couple of jumps away from Amarr so importing shouldn't be too bad. Relative safety and amount of maintenance is something only you can answer. Profitability is the largest factor most people look at. Looking at the system your corp holds sov in shows mostly low value moons. You can be almost 100% assured that any decent moons already have a tower placed at them. Most mining operations at the low level moons are an isk sink, usually around -100mil isk a month or more when you consider fuel. I looked into a similar setup in my space and I was able to turn less than 50mil profit a month with a medium tower. It was poorly defended and had no room for anything else on the tower so I decided not to pursue that. Make sure to do your research before committing to anything.

Exactly. It's so non-intuitive how it all works so you'll be doing a lot of trial and error. I think general storage is a booster thing. I only remember using silo's for materials with gas reactions in a wormhole. They stored things like megacyte used in the reactions.

Just don't think you are alone in your frustration and be prepared to lose a few cycles once you get started. The interface and process are probably some of the worst in the game.

Thank you VERY much, Kyra. That's got to be one of the most helpful single answers I've seen in the forums.

Apparently the general silos store PI items. Oh, well, so much for that idea.

I'm probably going to be running a Caldari tower since they get more CPU and that does seem to be the limiting factor - funny how that is the exact opposite of PI where you'll run out of juice before overloading your CPU... getting Caldari fuel blocks isn't impossible as I do have an alt that can mine ice in Caldari space and get it to where it can be converted.
