Amen.

To be honest, a lot of religions have practices that result in ecstatic visions caused by drugs. In this case, endorphines.

I can attest to the fact that plants with mind-altering properties are used in the spirit quest rituals of the Sebiestor tribe.

A Minmatar warship is like a rusting Beetle with 500 horsepower Cardillac engines in the rear, armour plating bolted to chassis and a M2 Browning stuck on top.

Quite right. Somehow, I completely misidentified the original poster. My apologies.

Note the difference between spiritual and recreational use. Hordenine also has a number of actual medicinal uses, as well.

All poison is medicine with the right dosage.

Besides, the original statement was that 'a lot of religions have practices that result in ecstatic visions caused by drugs'. This is true in our case, though it's not always ecstatic.

Half the time it's actually pretty damn scary and/or depressing.

My Voluval ritual had me hallucinating about these large black birds that the shaman identified as Corovids. Never seen a Corovid, didn't even know there are carrion birds of that size living on top of misty mountains, but it's pretty terrifying and also, thinking about it again, quite melancholic.

Truly shocking that adults have fetishes.

Perhaps this sort of reaction isn't all that surprising when seeing the myriad children in thread who have to label anything they don't understand as a fetish.

To Amarr's credit.. as prudes, at least we are self aware.

For flagellants, self-flagellation is not a test of faith. It is a form of devotion. Self-flagellation is thus akin to nightly prayers or going to church.

Maybe try meditation? Get a nice cup of tea, sit cross-legged at the peak of a mountain and let the winds flay the weakness from you.

That sounds a lot less... medieval to me...

Your pride has led you to err here.

You fail to draw distinction between self flagellation for correction and mastery of the flesh and PUBLIC self flagellation, which is vanity and boastfulness.

No, that distinction is not important.

You see, self-flagellation, is the same as attempting to tickle yourself. It can't be done, because the brain recognises it as being done by you. A self-flagellator will always hold back, because their brain tells them "ouch, that hurt, stop it".

Whereas, when the lasher and the lashed are two different people, then the lasher is not subject to the lashed's restrictions on maximum effort used in the lashing.

Thusly, self-flagellation would only allow mastering of the flesh to the limit that the self-flagellator is willing to inflict on themselves, their brain stops them.

And true mastery of the flesh, if such a concept does indeed exist, is only possible when someone is pushed beyond their brain's limits, by an external force.

So, I disagree with your statement.

Never met anyone with a fair amount of self-loathing, I take it?

Nor masochism.

... which is more about testing one's limits than about the pain, I gather. Seeing how much you can take.

That strikes me as being similarly in tune with a flagellant's beliefs and actions. Sort of like having a little imp (or sefrim? What do you call a small sefrim? Is there supposed to be such a thing?) on your shoulder, whispering, "Sure it hurts, but it's not unbearable. Come on! You can still stand it; clearly you haven't suffered enough!"

Mmmm, hardly. More that I was somewhat inebriated and saw the wrong name in the reply scrollback without remembering that it reverses order. But please do feel free to continue displaying your predisposition to racism.

Dear Ms. Arrendis,

Apology is accepted.

Although I confess to being a little puzzled as I never posted in this thread prior and shouldn't have been seen in the reply scrollback. Oh well! it's probably the blonde in me confusing me.

Cordially,

No ma'am, I believe it was Ms. Amalath's name visible as I scrolled through the responses beneath the text window when I composed mine that stuck in my head. And my apology extends to her as well.
