This is amazing advice I would never have thought of. Is the reason they wait until you are on the last can so that you have the most loot possible when they pop you, and they wouldn't have been able to hack it open themselves?

Or is it simply because it takes them a few seconds to lock and attack you, and they need you to have your guard completely down.

Thanks on the offer to contact you in-game; I shall do that in the not-too-distant future.

Yes, generally I want whoever is hacking the sites to have as much loot as possible, so its common to uncloak and point as soon as the last can is done.

Here's my basic guide to understanding wormholes, as you will by far be better off using them to travel into/through null than gates (I am a bit biased though)

Every wormhole has 'static' connection(s). This means there is always a wormhole/wormholes to the same class of space. You can tell what part of space it goes to by the signature (the three digit letters on the overview when you warp to the WH, NOT the 3 digits in your probe scanner)

Every C1 always has a WH to either, high, low or null
N110 (high)
J244 (low)
Z060 (null)

All C2's always have two static connections
B274 (high), Z647 (C1)
B274 (high), O477 (C3)
B274 (high), Y683 (C4)
A239 (low), D382 (C2)
E545 (null), N062 (C5)

C3s have one static
D845 (high)
U210 (low)
K346 (null)

C4s have two static, all to w-space. C4s never connect directly to empire.
P060 (C1)
N766 (C2)
C247 (C3)
X877 (C4)
H900 (C5)
U574 (C6)

C5s have one static to w-space. No empire statics again. This is the first class where you can jump a capital ship through the WH
Y790 (C1)
D364 (C2)
M267 (C3)
E175 (C4)
H296 (C5)
V753 (C6)

C6s have one static, to w-space. No empire statics again. Caps allowed here too
Q317 (C1)
G024 (C2)
L477 (C3)
Z457 (C4)
V911 (C5)
W237 (C6)

There are also unique WHs that allow nothing bigger than a destroyer through. Those sigs are
E004 (C1)
L005 (C2)
Z006 (C3)
M001 (C4)
C008 (C5)
G008 (C6)
Q003 (Nullsec)

If you're curious how long a WH will stay active, check this list
http://www.ellatha.com/eve/wormholelist.asp

Reviewing the info message of WHs themselves:
"This wormhole has not yet begun its natural cycle of decay and should last at least another day." The WH just spawned
"This wormhole is beginning to decay, and probably won't last another day." This is the wormhole's main life, and has over 25% of it's total time remaining.
"This wormhole is reaching the end of its natural lifetime." less than 25% of its lifetime remaining
"This wormhole is on the verge of dissipating into the ether." collapsing any second

Now about the second line: every wormhole only supports a max amount of mass going through it before it collapses.

"Has not yet had its stability significantly disrupted" - This indicates the wormhole is still quite stable, and has over 50% of its total allowable mass left.
"Has had its stability reduced, but not to a critical degree yet" - This means the wormhole has seen a decent amount of travel, and has less than 50% of its total allowable mass left.
"This wormhole has had its stability critically disrupted by the mass of numerous ships passing through and is on the verge of collapse." - This means exactly what it says. The wormhole has had most of its total allowable mass used up, and has less than 10% left. Collapse is imminent.

I left out one sig type: K162. A WH opens on one side with one of the sigs I listed above. The "exit" side always has a signature of K162.

Wormhole effects: Certain WHs has environmental effects. You will know that you jumped into one of these due to the popup message saying "Local spatial phenomena may cause strange effects on your ship systems"

Throw the WH into tripwire or look it up on http://www.staticmapper.com/ to see what type it is.

Black Hole:Bonus to missile velocity, missile explosion velocity, ship velocity, inertia and targeting range. penalty to web strength

Cataclysmic Variable:bonus to Shield transfer amount, Remote repair amount, Capacitor capacity, Capacitor recharge time. penalty to Remote Capacitor Transmitter amount, Local armor repair amount, Local shield boost amount

Magnetar:bonus to damage and Missile Explosion Radius. penalty to Drone Tracking, Targeting Range, Tracking Speed, Target Painter Strength

Pulsar: bonus to shield HP, NOS/Neut Drain Amount, signature. penalty to armor resists, cap recharge

red giant: bonus to heat damage multiplier, overload bonus, smart bomb range, smart bomb damage, bomb damage. no penalties

Wolf-Rayet:bonus to armor HP and small weapons damage. penalty to sig size and shield resists

exploration sites in WHs have sleepers (rats) guarding them, but classes 1-3 have nullsec data/relic sites as well. Until you get to know the site names, warp to them cloaked at 100k first to see if there are rats guarding it

Awesome writeup - thanks! I'm booking mark this for reference until I have the material internalized.

One more thing I realized I left out. The color of the WH is tied to the type of system it connects to, so you can figure out where the K162 WHs go by looking at it's color.

The holes going to empire space have the color of whatever background that empire region has, so http://i.imgur.com/NdLDTVL.jpg

I kind of assumed someone from signal cartel would chime in here so I kept my mouth shut on that aspect but since they've not been in here yet I'll post for them.

Edit: almost forgot their reddit
