A Legal Question

For labor reasons, my first science officer of my Thanatos carrier cannot be terminated without a valid reason. Something tells me being a fan of teenage angst bands and playing it so loudly I can hear it in my pod is not a valid reason.

Is it considered a constructive discharge by the Gallente Federation if I assign my first science officer eleven million Fedos as a pet and require that all crew keep all of their pets in their quarters at all times?

Actually, the angst band thing is grounds for summary execution. No need to stink up your ship with fedos. Besides, have you seen those things mass? Your carrier would have a hell of a time moving...

A little trust goes a long way. The less you use, the further you'll go.

i take it you didnt include the "owner/captain of the ship reserves right for summary discharge and dismissal of contract and any point in time" in the contract

Not everything in life needs a legal solution (gasp!).

You could simply introduce this young, impressionable science officer to music you personally think is better.

Though we are not sure we are fit to judge this person. On occasion we find ourself blasting My Charmerout Romance on a pair of headphones while crossposting animated cat pictures on Spacebook and Galnet+.

Gallentes are always unprofessional like that.
In the State we have a noise limit that is set for every crew member. They can be punished or discharged from duty for violation of allowed boundary of noise generation quota.

Regulations are to be followed.

Honored are the dead, for their legacy guides us.

People still use headphones? I thought the Egonics implants made headphones obsolete by now.

Just listen to mechano-swing. That smooth voice accompanied by the sound of piston-driven wind instruments and the hissing of steam vents. Exquisite.

I am not sure why you would like to comply to federal rules when capsuleers are not even bound by them, especially when it comes to what happens inside their own ships...?

As this crewman is in a Thanatos, you're not flying in patrolled space, and probably outside the jurisdiction of any of the Big Four.

Ask him if he thinks his music would sound as good in a vacuum. I'm sure he'll catch your meaning.

I may have to take this idea, i don't mind noise but lots of it at once makes my trigger finger itch.

ohhh Elmund, There is often nothing quite like a physical interface, you like your holo or mind controlled keyboards? wait till you try Mechanical switches.

Well, when you have all kinds of chrome stuffed into and around your flesh body, using analogue starts to become very inconvenient.

The proposed solution would probably fall foul of the laws on ethical treatment of animals. Fedos should not be subject to such music either.

If you consider yourself subject to Federal jurisdiction, you would have a number of options under the law. I would consider the noise abatement regulations pertinent, but you could consider a whole range of military code violations if you wanted. Remember, the Federation believes in personal liberty up to the point where it infringes on the liberties of others. Refusal to accept reasonable conditions is grounds for terminating a contract of employment.

I'm amazed even that sound carries into the pod. Less nanofiber structure might be another solution.

Quite frankly, I'm surprised anyone can hear anything from inside the capsule and all. Our flesh body is put in stasis while in a pod and our sensory inputs has to come in from ship sensors. We shouldn't even be able to hear a damn thing inside our ship corridors either.

I think it's probably memory retention. You know, when a piece of music keeps popping up in your head unbidden, even though the environment is silent - like that infernal dance tune of a few years back. (Great, now I can hear it again).

Solution 1: Airlock
Solution 2: The Brig
Solution 3: Maroon in a station somewhere

You can put "Threaten to" before each if you're feeling extra-merciful. Most of all, he should treat your words "stop it" as holy and immediately cease without the need to resort to a threat. If he doesn't, it usually means he's on a collision course with quick and tragic demise - probably depressed to boot. Better just apply solution 1 and get a new one, they're cheap anyway.

Solution 4: Soundproof his quarters. Pad the walls thick enough that he can't sit in it for more than five minutes without suffocating.

Solution 5: Just ban all audio devices, or implement maximum sound limit regulations, of which violation results in pay cuts and/or discharge.

Solution 6: Duct-tape over-ear headphone cans to his head with our state of the art Tech II Matari Duct Tape. Or our prototype Tech III Matari Duct Tape: Slaver-jaws strength.

Solution 7: Cut all power to his quarters. If he complains, cut the life support. It's your ship. In space, you're the only law.

And Nauplius neatly demonstrates why, Captain Moray, whilst you may be technically correct, natural and moral law still applies to us all lest we become monsters.

Just because you can behave as judge and executioner, does not mean you should. The application of law - whichever system you adhere to and contract to observe with your crew - is essential to civilisation.
