I am a writer by trade, usually prose but I think I would like to write about my Eve characters and my alliance. My question is how would I go about publishing it legally? I would be more than willing to give CCP the rights but as this is what I do for a living I would need some sort of monetary compensation. Everything else can be negotiated, is this a possibility?

In the past, people used to write short stories for the quarterly EVE Online Magazine (E-ON). These stories featured some beautiful artwork and were cross-checked by CCP for continuity with the EVE universe. It's been years since this, and the online chronicles, were published. Perhaps there are people who were associated with this that might see this forum post.

Publication of the magazine is being halted now... Soon it will be gone forever. As for the future of the story... the series is still in the works so there is hope there.

As for OP, I am thinking that if you have talent, get in touch with CCP and show them what you have. If they want to give you rights to do it as you please or if they would like to publish it themselves with you as the writer then that is their choice. I would say get in touch and see what they'd like to do.

You need to speak to the CCP legal team (still in Atlanta?) CCP Manifest should be your first contact. I write novella and novelletes based in Eve and include a "not for profit" disclaimer at the start which was provided by CCP's legal team. As with most things, making money off the back off CCP's IP requires excellence and a lot of red tape. Easier just to do it for fun unless you meet a very high standard.

What really? I don't understand CCP's seeming neglect of their fiction department over the past few years. They had such a strong universe built, and every new Chronicle brought it into sharper focus.

The Chronicles were and remain one of my favorite things in EVE, and when they stopped so abruptly I was deeply saddened.

I just really wish they'd bring on at least one dedicated fiction writer, surely they could afford it.

Excelling in all things terrible.

Ever since they got rid of the Empress so nonchalantly I really hate this game. I log in and I hate it. It fills me with loathing. So this may come across as very negative. As someone who enjoyed the chronicles, even though they were not as good as the best sci fi I have read, I don't think you should engage Eve fiction. It appears to me from the outside, especially considering the company has been sold recently, as a hotbed of deceit, ignorance, and carelessness. (I don't mean you Falcon, you are probably stuck in a tight position and who can blame you for shutting down my horrible thread?)

I don't know why you don't spend time on your own projects and your own worlds. Then you could make money off of it, you should be entitled to your work. I have seen so many fanfic writers get burnout from writing for a game they don't own and then seeing their careful work simply tossed aside. Why would you work on a storyline which has been squandered so recklessly by someone or some bureaucracy? Everyone should be entitled to get money for their work.

I guarantee you I have read much better science fiction than the chronicles and these non-Eve stories inspired my character building much moreso than the Chronicles.

The idea of a distant part of the universe populated by immortal humans with little to no "alien" involvement has been done, and with none of the absurd limitations (already surpassed by current science) Eve's universe places on it. Don't get me wrong - some of the missions are extraordinarily well written. They are fun, the different factions - although a bit xenophobic (though nowhere near as awful as Blizzard's WoW races) are interesting and some are quite intelligent. But there is little new here that was not already being addressed in other franchises, novels and movies.

If you do decide to write, they should pay you. Everything must be done properly and in a business way, and if you don't get paid then who the hell is going to stop you from writing fanfic? I assure you only the stupidest of gaming companies would sue fanfic that was not sold or pornographic....they would completely alienate their fans.

I wish you good fortune in writing about your characters and your corp mates in the EVE universe.

If you want to do it for profit jump threw the legal hoops and meet the quality standard CCP will set for their intellectual property.

As players in a MMO it is too easy to forget we are not the owners, just the users.

Certainly anyone can find lots of bad things about the EVE online universe, not the least of which is the glorification of racial based human slavery.

I find it interesting that any subscriber can also step up and write content for submission to EVE, so instead of whining we can submit content to make it better. CCP encourages players to realize their individual actions count and are indeed significant, something you do not see much of elsewhere in the corporate sphere. Instead of forum tears I think submitting well written storylines will have a much more positive impact.

I look forward to reading what you submit to enrich the EVE Online universe created by CCP.
