A question semi-related to the topic of the thread:

I haven't heard about many epic null fights on non-eve sites in forever. Does that have something to do with the lack of new people? I mean in the past, you'd expect some crapstrom to make news in places like the escapist, kotaku, or d-toid once a year or so. Maybe the game isn't getting enough free publicity like it used to.

IMO the best thing to increase subs is for a titan pilot to hit bridge to start a 2,000 player battle again.

PC Gamer is still reviewing EVE Online updates. PC Gamer is not just some blog site, they've been doing games and tech journalism for longer than the WWW has existed. The top comment on that page is:

"So, a week ago (after trying so many times) I decided to give Eve a proper go... Now I've got more of a grasp on the game I'm totally hooked. I've got so much to learn and the game isn't very good at hand holding - though there's plenty of players happy to help - but I can see why it's a total life suck."

New people are coming, and getting very interested. This guy here is starting out with a decent enough attitude that once he learns how to not let it suck his life away and still enjoy it, he'll probably stick around. I can say with confidence that I'm not worried about the health of EVE right now. Because I see a lot of new players getting stuck into it like this almost every day.

If new pilots have more incentive to stay, and not be confonted with skillplans that takes longer than a year to complete. They would be more inclined to stay. If you gave pilots a means to reinvent themselfs without cost. Poeple wouldnt give up as they do. Plex price and fozzysov arnt really the big elephants in this room.

See, what's really going on is, people are calling the things they don't like themselves the reason why new players aren't staying. Every single independent doomsayer is forking out their own unique 'reasons' for this phenomenon. Again, "think of the children" is not a valid argument for the changes you want. What benefit do they have to the game as a whole, and the overarching premise of EVE's very existence?

The last big fight to make news outside Eve was B-R on 27 January 2014, so we are approaching 2 years ago.

I think the reason is more to do with CCP design decision rather than a lack of new players (who aren't generally involved in those massive fights to much degree).

It began with the Phoebe travel changes, where in the devblog there are a couple of relevant quotes:

Why this?/Why now?
[the travel changes]
- Big fights are cool, but they’re crowding out more accessible and more frequent smaller ones.

What are the anticipated consequences?
In the short term, we would anticipate a reduction in the degree to which the average non-trivial capital fight escalates, and the number of parties involved. This seems likely to increase the frequency of capitals being deployed in small-scale engagements, in both lowsec and nullsec.
...
it seems plausible that the general reduction in travel capabilities will lead to more localism

CCP wanted to design large fights out of the game to a degree, opening the door to more Capital use in lowsec and more localised conflict.

That was also further emphasised with the introducton of Aegis sov, which was designed to break large fights under Dominion sov into several smaller skirmishes over command nodes.

Looking back, the changes have been really successful in achieving what CCP predicted back then, but it's clear that a lot of players want big fights back again.

Adding to the above:

- many alt accounts were closed as there's less use for massive capital alt armies, this was obviously expected so no one sane is surprised by a drop in player numbers

- some people who really enjoy the large fleets fights stop bothering, probably a minority but still. This was obviously expected so no one sane is surprised by a drop in player numbers

Well and I have only two days left and nothing of interest came to my mind for the last month.
I can now fly a Sabre, but **** if I knew what I should do with it.

Ah well, was a nice month. :p

The typical way to use a Sabre solo is to put a prototype or improved cloak on it and sit orbiting a gate in nullsec. When a shuttle, pod or other juicy target jumps in, decloak, bubble up and kill it.

It's the perfect "solo"'ish gate camping tool for nullsec, but does also require eyes on the other side of the gate to see what is about to jump.

The game's already getting subscriptions while retaining its nature without casualifying it or dumbing it down any further. Point refuted. Next?

Had the sabre for over a year now, and still didn't stab customers with it yet, though I may have lost a few.
Nothing better to sit on a gate to miss ships going by , except the ones which are too powerful.

Edit:
I found the coyote epic fail video where he swims backward going down into RAPID!!!
Shows up at the 6th minute T.0000 which I'll link later.

Capital ships story:
1 Orca (with mining pilot, who flies Prospect) never flown yet except maybe twice out and then back in of the same station.
As you can easily deduce there, there are specific related skills to capitals which do not relate with frigates or cloaking.
Result = potential delays.

1 Freighter pilot which never bought one freighter that I know of yet.
I'm pretty sure I got a JF capital pilot before.

1 JF pilot, last.

Maybe one more capital ship pilot, but most likely not yet.
The reason is not that I didn't want it, but I couldn't afford it yet which should change shortly.

Additionally,
the stats do not include inactive accounts, which are probably going up, not down, which is better than not, or status quo.
Why do I italize the latin expression? Why not.

Builds ship in empty Quafe bottle.

What the **** is the point of sitting at a gate like an idiot, waiting for ships to come by,
in the hopes that a few of them are easy enough to kill.

That's ******* worthless!

I probably lost the sabre in FW, I could verify in kill mail.

Doesn't take math to help a new player actually create a new account standing right there next to them on their PC. Doesn't take math to see the flood of new players coming through help channel literally every day. Doesn't take math to open your eyes and take a look around without that myopic stare that refuses to see anything but doom.

But what Scipio said. Show us the math. He just gave you a run down on the deflation of subscriptions in this game, it was a lot of alts but if you're paying attention, the drop in subs is beginning to reverse, because despite losing a bunch of alts, the game continues to pull in new players. It has all year. You're just looking at raw data, and nothing else.

Here's the problem with raw data alone with no critical analysis - it never ever ever tells the full story. Let me give you an example.

There is more violent crime reported per capita in Australia than the US, ACCORDING TO the raw data.

However, the data does not take into account how different our laws are, and the differences between what each country considers a violent crime. It also does not take into account how much crime goes unreported. One can speculate on the data, but without a critical analysis, one will never be able to provide a conclusion on the data alone.

So please, show us your math. Show us your critical analysis. Scip has already shown you how to do a critical analysis by providing context to the data. Show us why he's wrong.

Personally, I think he wasted his time, because we all know you're probably going to ignore it anyway. But, you could prove us wrong, and surprise us, that would be interesting.
