[Casual Discussion] Why'd you become a capsuleer?

The road from Kameira to Capsuleer was long and blood soaked. As a Kameira I dutifully killed everything I was ordered to with vigorous precision. As the assignments given became increasingly dangerous I witnessed the relentless attrition that is the brief combat lifespan of Kameira shock troops. Stubbornly I refused to die.

While being pieced back together after my next to last mission I over heard my holder rebuke my Commanding Officer for not accepting contracts that exceeded the capacity of his troops to possibly survive. "Kameira were ammo that should be expended to the last round." Those words of his etched themselves into my soul and I realized my life had not been in service to God, I was viewed as a mere tool of warfare, nothing more.

When fully recovered and deemed fit for combat again I was returned to my unit and I told everyone in my company what our holder really thought our purpose was, some agreed, others like me were angered. In the end we all agreed if we were going to be spent as ammo it would be in the cause of obtaining our own freedom.

The night before our next mission I slipped out of our closely guarded barracks and made my way to the mansion of our holder where upon entry I killed him and every adult member of his household that were present. We shipped out the same morning before the grisly deed was discovered. When we arrived in Republic Space to support an amarr raid my entire company walked away from combat and sought asylum in the Minmatar Republic.

After a long adjustment period under the watchful eyes of Republic Security forces I enlisted in the Republic Navy where I tested and trained to be a combat pilot. I served many years as a baseline Republic Fleet Navy pilot and advanced to the rank of Republic Fleet Rear Admiral. At the age of 45 I retired and took up full time status as a student at Republic University earning a Doctorate in Applied Physics and a Masters in Experimental Quantum Electrodynamics.

However the ashes of my fallen brethren that had been long ago merged with my own flesh called to me for justice and the flame of passion for combat returned. I tested and was found compatible for capsuleer training and conversion. My Republic Fleet Navy veterans benefits made the training affordable so to extend the time I could be an effective combat pilot I became a capsuleer.

By the time I realized teaching was not enough for me, I had become an old man. Well, too old to enter military service - at least according to existing regulations. Becoming a capsuleer was the only way I could follow in my father's footsteps and continue the struggle that is very apparently not over: the struggle for Matari freedom.

He, my father, was hesitant when I approached him for his counsel - no Vherokior raised in the old ways would make such a decision without input from their parents, no matter how old they are. He said that the Matari need to focus on rebuilding what was lost to the Amarr invaders (our culture, identity, dignity and discipline), not fan the flames of war. After a long and ponderous discussion that lasted an entire night, he gave me leave to enter the RMS's capsule program. I completed my training, and on the condition I serve in the TLF for a period of at least one year, I was granted the ships, funds and contacts necessary to protect my people's interests.

I have two or so months left in that agreement, and I expect I will have many difficult choices to make during that time; not least among them being whether to continue to fan the flames of war between empires, or go my own way. My comrades, please do not take such musings to mean defeatism! Being what I am, what we are, one can not often help see human folly - in spite of our efforts - as frustrating.

You probably can find toxic pride in most monasteries, along with lots of other ways people don't always act as they think they should. It's a place where people live, after all. Even if they're trying to perfect their souls, monks are people, not celestial spirits. They'll have plenty of flaws.

The question is what else you might sometimes find there.

Power, glory, and immortality are things you probably wouldn't find much of, though, so ... I guess you're looking in the right place, if there's a right place to look for things like that.

I woke up with a hangover and implants.

At least that's what I tell men who are bothering me when I'm trying to drink a cocktail. But really it was because my real father took care of me when my mother and my stepfather were ignoring me. My father sold his estates when he joined a monastery, and he used the money to buy me a life as a capsuleer. The capsuleer's life has its horrors, too damn many of them, but I didn't know that when I was young and I suppose it's better than growing grapes on Akhragan.

I pursued the study of fine art as a means to express discontent with the domestic policies of the Federation, and later as a graduate found that it was a platform for shedding light on uncomfortable truths. Our societies cultivate some ugly behaviors that many prefer to overlook, and I took it upon myself to stand as a reminder to the powers that be that we are not ignorant to their failings.

Given the opportunity to become a capsuleer was a terrifying prospect. To risk waste of this life, learning nothing, only for the possibility of becoming a monster... knowing capsuleers cause little but suffering in their vainglory. In this another uncomfortable truth made itself apparent: that I may resist this force of calamity on equal terms in order to alleviate suffering around the cluster.

That sole mote of hope is what pushed me to accept the challenge.

Simple really, I didn't fee like dying and I wanted to serve the people for as long as I could. Plus the State was paying for it so what did I have to lose?

Family, Corporation, and State, in that order. What else is there worth fighting for?

You didn't feel like dying and submitted yourself to euthanasia for your clones to roam the space.
Good job.

I do prefer this way of looking at it. The infomorph survives.

We all die. We just come back again. Or at least, a version of us comes back again.

We aren't immortal. We are the undead.

I am quite... dumbfounded by concept of "infomorph". While the information persists, the running process dies regardless. And information without the process is dead, it is static, like a frozen crystal.

Evolved from normal citizens into... reusable starship control modules.
