Are there any important players one should know? If yes, why?

Um, no. I don't think so.

However, there might be some you'll hear about and here would be my reasons:

1. Chribba: Very Important Person
Because if you ever need a 3rd party for a transaction, he's #1 for that

2. Loyalanon: Very Infamous Person
Watchlist him. To understand why, go fly something in Uedama or Niarja while he is on and do it AFK. The only problem is he plays about 16 hours a day, so good luck with that.

3. The Mittani (Mittens): Very Important and Very Infamous Person
If you ever need to blame someone for anything at all, this is your go to guy. Instantly relieves you of any stress when you can shift all your screw ups onto this guy. He probably did it anyway (maybe not, but what can you say about a guy that eats children for breakfast....or so I've been told)

4. Ripard Teg: Very Self Important Person
Much worse than Mittens, but no one wants to get on his bad side. Blogs happen when you do

5. Sugar Kyle: Very Important Person
CSM of everyone's heart and one of the few CSM members worth anything

6. Steve Ronuken: Very Important Tech Person
Also a CSM worth something and provider of very good industry tools if you are into that sort of thing: https://www.fuzzwork.co.uk/

There's probably more I guess.

How could a list be complete without the greatest magpie/hoarder in EVE: Entity.

The guy has practially one of every ship/item that has ever been made (minus the Gold Magnate)

But on topic:

There are many reasons why some players stood or stand out at some point or another. Is it necessary to know them ? That depends on you and what you do in EvE. So basically you have to make your own list.

Here's mine:

1. Akita T : For being the most knowledgeable industry related EvE player and forum who...

2. Some of the pilots I had the chance to fly with and talk to on voice comms. To many to name though.

3. The regulars from OOPE, because they're funny and thoughtful.

4. The regulars from C&P, where I used to lurk a long time ago. Good times giggling over the misfortunes of less fortunate pilots.

5. Cat O'Ninetails, because Cat.

6. UAE for becoming a household name on the forum and therefore not being Unsuccesful At Everything.

7. Rain6337, Rain6....... the whole bunch of them.

8. Chribba and all the other people working hard on 3rd party tools like Osmium, EFT, Pyfa, Dotlan ...

9. The guy who made songs for the Goons (Suas ?) "Little Bees, little bees, X up for POS destruction ..." I love it.

10. The rest of you guys and gals.

Honorary mentions: Lady Spank, Tippia, Solstice Project, Zedrik Cayne ... oh god, so many actually.

7. James 315: The founding father of the New Order. Some say his lengthy manifestos are written with miners' tears; some say beneath his coat, there are wings. Love him or hate him, but pay for your permit.

8. Nitshe: Maybe the single most infamous person in New Eden. It's an established fact that Nitshe has over a thousand alts in over a thousand different corps and is responsible for every single awox or corp theft in the last few years.

9. Tippia: The final boss of the Eve forums.

10. Endie: Mittani's secret dagger in the dark. Whenever something goes wrong and you blame Mittens, it was actually Endie's doing. Or a Nitshe alt. Mostly it's Nitshe alts, actually.

11. Gevlon Goblin: A very peculiar young gentleman with a talent for ISK making and a burning hatred for Goons.

12. Infinity Ziona: Famous inventor of the "stern telling off (in a non-violent way)™", because sometimes CN-Antimatter or RF-Fusion just aren't good enough.

13. Boom Boom Longtime: BBL is love, BBL is life. For some, the only reason to shop in Amarr instead of Jita.

14. Mangala Solaris: The heart, mind and soul of RVB

Other persons of interest:
Elo Knight, Grath Telkin, Vimsy Vortis, Xenuria, Commissar Kate, Tora Bushido, Wensley, Sort Dragon, Malcanis, Prometheus Exenthal, Helicity Boson, Alice Saki, Alex Grison.
