The client should know the language that you understand. There are quite a few language libraries. I have even heard that games are starting to use Google's translations.

This way someone can join a corp or fleet and everything that isn't in their language can be translated and replaced since it also knows the languages being spoken. Maybe something in "Show info" to indicate what their native language is or put a Jenshae Chiroptera: [Eng]> привет

Already been suggested. Still not reasonable due to the inherent inaccuracies of translation programs. Just open Google Translator in the IGB.

A lot of unnecessary copying and pasting that way though.

There's even more unneeded work if you try to get a Dev to spend a couple weeks coding one together and debugging it.

And before someone trys to say "But they just have to use the Google translator and run it through that". Yes, the translator that Google uses does exist, but coding up an interface to hook into the Google translator and get it to translate stuff (first it needs to know IF it needs to translate) and not screw up other stuff in the game is a seriously complicated project. Yes, it is doable, but the Dev time would be better spent on working on actual improvements to the game (especially since there is already a workaround in place, namely copy-pasting it to Google). And then, at the end of all of that, you would wind up with a translation that is only marginally effective.

The short story is that, it wouldn't add enough to the game or be of enough use to enough people for it to be worth the Dev time. Their time is better spent fixing more serious issues that affect all of Eve.

Amateurs in Second Life make real time language translators.

Good for them (BTW though, 'amateur' and 'coder who doesn't work for the company that owns the game' are far from the same thing). I never said it was hard, simply that it is time consuming and would add little to the game to make it worthwhile.

... and yet they are making an effort to have native language game clients to try and spread into other countries. Don't you think those first players would feel more welcome and likely to stay if they can communicate with us?

You must be using the term 'communicate' very loosely. The accuracy that translation programs like Google Translate can provide borders on the incoherent most of the time, and it's much much worse when you try to start including game specific terms (especially once you start getting into idiomatic differences).

For instance, the term 'rat' as a shortened form of 'pirate' wouldn't make any sense to a russian player because the translation for 'rat' points towards the rodent and 'pirate' is something completely different. There are many examples like that where a translation program will attempt a direct translation and it will come out as gibberish to the intended audience.

With correct spelling and full sentences, Google translate can be surprisingly accurate.

That is a side effect of making access so easy. When it required some technical know how or the social skills to get others to help you, the usenets and Internet were a whole better experience, more polite too. I really miss the days when I used to dial into the local university. Sad

Anyway, if they did implement this feature and people were being frustrated with communicating things I am sure the habit of writing in

would be ridiculed out of them.

"Agh! This no work." "LOL learn to spell and write properly nub."
