Lets say I decide to stay solo, and just..be a pirate so to speak... is there enough activity in "low level" areas that I can have my fun? I know there are no levels, but you get what I mean. Would I need to spend several weeks and get all sorts of ships so that I can head to low sec zones to do see other players? Basically, is the universe so big that finding other players would be hard to come by?

You can only fly one ship at a time, so fit out that way if you want to. As far as finding people, you can see for yourself by checking out the in game map and the info it provides. Set it up for 'show all lines', 'color lines by region'. Then check out the filters for 'pilots in space in the last 30m', 'ships destroyed in the last hour', and 'jumps in the last hour'. That should give you a hint on which way to point your ship.

I don't generally recommend solo play, especially as a newbie but...Yes.

There are populated areas and nonpopulated areas. Go to Amamake and sit in Planet III belt 1 and someone will be in to relieve you of your ship within a few minutes at most. Other parts of lowsec (and 0.0. And even some parts of hisec) are rather desolate (Arida).

Since you seem to have the correct attitude towards PVP (and specifically pirating) I am just going to drop you a link here to the definitive PVP guide for newbies in frigates. The Rifter Drifter Guide

It contains lots of useful information about the combat mechanics in EVE, and how to use them to your advantage to violence other peoples internet space ships.

Your "Fly solo and pirate" idea of playing this game is perfectly viable, and IMO some of the best fun you can have in game. Just know that it takes a lot of knowledge, forethought, and patience. You will never have as much isk as those who choose to play the game grinding NPCs in "safe" space (H sec or Blue Null) but learning to live off of what you can scrape together by out smarting your victims is hugely rewarding.

If you have any questions, or just want to get together with some one to go shoot things, feel free to send me an EVE mail.

Might be a silly question, but I guess in this forum there are no silly questions. How big is the eve universe? Is it possible to see every planet and star system?

EVE Online is big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mindbogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to EVE Online.
