If fitting for more yield gets you isk at a rate which increases your isk per hour for a longer duration than it takes to replace the ship then the answer is don't worry about gankers and just stock up on ships.

Of course quantifying how many ships that you will theoretically loose is no simple task. However my point was more that you should not let fear of loosing your ship paralyze you with fear to the point where you don't do anything. Also situational awareness will get you further than tank.

TL;dr
Don't be afraid to try out some risky stuff to figure things out. Experimentation (a.k.a. trial and error) is one of the best ways to learn.

Just on ganking. My alliance tag will indicate I know something about the subject.

We often train up new gankers by having them target Ventures (something they can kill), so you aren't safe based on flying a cheap ship alone. And we will hit Procurers to make a point now and again (this reminds me, I own a couple of dozen Skiffs at the moment, so I should probably organise a Skiff Hunt Sunday to drive up demand, then sell into the demand spike)

Diligence is your best option to avoid accidents. Watch your surroundings. If something is suspicious - assume you are about to be attacked and react accordingly. Your directional scanner (Alt+D) is your friend as it gives you the means to see suspicious ships well in advance of them attacking you.

The best way to learn how not to be ganked is to carry out a few ganks yourself and learn our tricks, then develop strategies to counter them.

Best way to deal with ganking is ...
Train yourself to read the word [undock] as the phrase "I might explode"
and that clicking it means you agree to it

when you're mentally prepared for 'suddenly explosions' it's much less of a shock.

Industrial ships are laughably easy to blow up, most have very limited options for fitting a tank.
If you have Combat Drones and something that resembles an attempt at tanking your ship, you can get yourself ignored by some people.
But if someone wants you blown up ... the only way you can stop them is by not undocking.
In eve, at some point, someone WILL want to blow you up ... take it as a given inevitability.
In the meantime .. keep having fun.
