It would be interesting to know how many newbies actually find the new player faq during their trial and how many of them manage to read section 7.

Thanks for mentioning it. Smile

bingo, his pig not being a goat doesn't make the pig wrong, just him an idiot for shouting at his pig "WHY ARENT YOU A GOAT!" (Source)

What will make more newcomers stick is themepark content. I believe the future of MMOs lie in the sandpark model. Give players stuff to do out of the box, but also provide them the tools of the sandbox to create their own content.
No such thing... that works anyway. Just like how that player owned dungeon thingy in EQ2 pretty much was a complete fail. Once you start sandboxing a progression themepark you create a gaping hole to jump though to max level - skipping all content. Eventually it needs to be nerfed into the ground or your game just fails to dullness.

It just doesn't mix, not to any real potential. If say minecraft were originally built that way, it certainly wouldn't be a strong sandbox game nor the top selling PC game of all time, nor top android game of all time. Probably would have never gotten out of beta.

The future is as the present is, sandbox is king. Unfortunately they will keep cranking out progression themepark after progression themepark because they are much easier to make for the big blathering whale spenders in the new-age f2p model. It's a safe bet for publishers and investors, counting on the few that spend tens of thousands each in the item shops with a big casual dumb themepark. It's like the trash reality show of our gaming generation while anything with real potential got canceled so to crank out a dozen of these wallowing swines.

I'm in it for the money
