Personally, I tend to prefer regular reppers over ancillary for general PvP. Active rep is kinda for longer fights to begin with, if you're in "eh, I just have to take a few hits before the fight's done" mode a buffer tank might serve you better, shoving an EANM or something in that slot for a bit maybe if nothing else will fit.

This isn't to say that ancillaries are useless or anything, they're just... more situational. Like, they're crazy good if you're the lead-in tackle for a fleet, where you really MIGHT have to hold on for dear life for 8 or so repper cycles until the cavalry finishes warping in and you can blow up in peace. As a sort of general rule, though, active is sort of a long-haul thing.

the AAR gives a huge burst tank and is very easy to fit. fitting a buffer (aka plate) is just going to slow you down. looking in eft a 200mm plate doesn't look too bad. but for a 1v1 I think I'd take the AAR.

The Rifter used to be good I'm told. It is not now.

Not true, before it was REALLY good, then it got nerfed and is just, good.

did it ever actually get nerfed? I was thinking it was more that every other frigate got boosted and the rifter just didn't really keep up with the other t1 frigs

Hey, good to see you are interested in flying a Rifter, it used to be the only thing one of my characters was trained to fly, I was mainly interested in Solo work so my fit is a bit biased towards that, and it takes high SP to fit correctly with all the same stuff I used, you can down grade to Meta 4 if it is cheaper and yields the same result, here it is (I have had to switch around modules due to the new module name changes):

Krieger Mk.II

150mm Light AutoCannon II - Hail S (160)
150mm Light AutoCannon II - Hail S (160)
150mm Light AutoCannon II - Hail S (160)
Small Nosferatu II (You can swap this for a Neut, you have enough Cap for a minute or 2 if you pulse the Repairer)

1MN Monopropellant Enduring Afterburner
X5 Prototype Engine Enervator
Warp Scrambler II

Damage Control II
200mm Steel Plates II
Small Ancillary Armour Repairer - 8 Nanites

Small Anti-Explosive Pump I
Small Auxiliary Nano Pump I
Small Auxiliary Nano Pump I

This fit with perfect skills in relevant fields has the following stats:

125 DPS (Heated)
Cap Stable at 40.4% with NOS Running, provided your opponent has more Cap then you (Works better on Amarr ships)
4.52k EHP
141.2 HP/s with the Ancillary Armour Repairer on Heat
Fit is under 4mil ISK total

This is a great little fit that has work awesome for me, keep in mind with this fit I use Improve Exile and Drop, makes up for the tracking loss on the guns due to Hail, and gives you a boost to your repair amount, which makes a massive difference, a lot of people say the cost isn't worth it, but I have been in situations where it has made all the difference, and it is not much ISK so long as you have an income that substitutes your PvP, haha! Best of luck with your PvP! :D

I have flown solo rifters on my other accounts. Often with *very* low skill points. I have a dual rep fit that is very hard to fly but when you get it right, it is boss, and really catches the others out. They just don't expect you to tank like that. Buffer tanked rifters are also pretty good and much easier to fly. But less good for solo.

Rifters are not bad. The change to falloff has changed the roll a little, but they are a fun ship to fly and you don't need a bunch of drone skills for "current meta, non thinking kitty bastards". Brawling is still a thing and can be done well.

Generally speaking solo means active tank most of the time, and frequently a good active tank and little buffer. Fights last longer and managing everything is far far more important. missclick that cap booster and its all over. Don't heat or turn the tank off to late and your cooked. etc. Frigates in general are hard to do this with, but it can be done.

Also Rifters are the coolest looking ship in the game :D .. Even better than a naglfar.

Well fun is also good.

Slicer is best looking ship in game. Hands down. Too bad everyone knows your fit the moment they see you on dscan. I love everything about that ship.
