New render of Shields

As a gullable fan of a show such as Stargate SG-1, Atlantis and Universe, when I heard about Eve Online, I just squeeled at the possibility of a high-quality game bringing me as close to that universe as possible, and by god it has. However, there is one thing that has remained unfaithful, is the way that shields are rendered when they are hit. In such shows, a 'hitbox' oval shape forms around the ship, protecting it. However in Eve, the effect is simply a 'flat' texture that flashes. It is a shame, as the rest of the effects in Eve such as ship thrusters, warping and even mining look so good. I hope that this reaches out to someone that can make this happen. I have a feeling that many other Sci-Fi fans that have witnessed such effects would be as grateful as myself.

Many thanks,

A "bubble" of sorts might make it difficult to see any of the multitude of other visible module effects active upon the hull itself ? I dont know. It might well be a nice and pleasing change yet I do like the existing :)

I would suggest you check some other sci-fi shows/novels before assuming that the Stargate series is the end all for how accurate shielding is portrayed. Not that Stargate is a bad show or anything, I loved it myself, but it's not what EVE is basing itself off of.

Eve shields are less 'inflatable sumo suit' and more like 'yoga pants'.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

I'm all for yoga pants, but I prefer kinkier stuff like leather & latex. Blink

To get back on topic for the OP, I agree that it would be cool to see like flashing section of shield light up when hit with a weapon, but at the same time, to go back to what someone else responded:

So it could be pleasing to the eye at first, but might get annoying after a while if you can't tell or have a harder time seeing that your mods like armor hardeners, shield boosts, reps and other stuff that makes your ship glow or have snazzy effects are turned on.

This. I honestly prefer the current shield graphics as opposed to a permanent bubble around the ship which honestly looked pretty horrible. And visually seeing each piece of ammo impact the shield is impossible to render, not to mention pretty useless.

Mining used to look much cooler. Sounded much cooler too. I really don't know why they changed it to the way it is.

If brute force isn't working, you're just not using enough.

This is something minor that I've always wanted. Prolly going to implement it into my game...

But in regards to limited viability, at least in Stargate, many of the shields were invisible (With the exception of certain alteran shields), but the local area of impact was lit up when the shield was hit.

You have all made very good points about the problem with seeing boosts and stuff. I at least would like to see some sort of update for shields. Eve Online is very much a game about Graphics and Gameplay, and I'd like to see that progress a little more. I mean really, who gives a **** about having dust on their ships? But however, good job CCP, for progressing this far, and I hope to see some additional updates for improved graphics and graphics performance respectively. Thank you all for your constructive feedback. Big smile

At times they have been both.

I'd also like to mention that my idea isn't a bubble that you can always see, that would be very annoying and distracting, just to move the hit effect a couple of cm (in monitor terms) from the ships hull. I mean lets be honest, it makes sense. A generator creates a field, and naturally a spherical shape should be produced. At least give us the option! xD

Because no one who does it pays attention to it. They're too busy being AFK to pay attention.
