weird "enter character" thing on launcher

Ok this has come up a few times now and for the life of me i cannot even understand what its for

My launcher has my account name already in, all i have to do is enter my password and hit enter. Now if i typo'd my password in the past it would just fail "incorrect password" in red letters.

Now if i typo my password it brings up a second thing telling me i havent logged in from my ip before and asks me to "enter the name of a character on the account" or some such. I type in "Aramatheia" and hit continue. red letters appear "incorrect password" and under it "incorrect character name"

Well... as anyone with 1 or more braincell can work out, clearly i do actually own a character named "Aramatheia" on this account.

What is the purpose of this thing, this "confirmation"? It fails even with correct data and all it does is add an extra step with NO net gain. Its just a pointless waste of time. Can the launcher just go back to the default "incorrect password" in red letters and abolish this nonsense "step"?

Type in the correct password to start with, problem solved.

Did you try clicking the button, instead of pressing "enter"? This was an issue a few weeks ago. The "cancel"-button was assigned to the "enter"-key. The check itself has been there for ages on the forums already. Since TwoFactorAuthentication hit the game, the launcher started to ask as well. The vague response-message adds a layer of security, as it does not confirm an account's existence.

I almost always hit enter, is this two factor auth thing just like a randomly occuring thing? Could it be that im typing my password fine but the hitting enter brings up the check anyway?

I think if you have cleared your cache it might trigger this. I usually get it when I mess up my password though.

No, they changed the launcher to ask for the character name instead of just saying "incorrect password." Once you put the character name, they log the attempt, then they give you incorrect password.

So the fix is, if you see the launcher ask you for a character name, just hit the Cancel button to go back and type your password again, correctly. The character name question is just pointless.

This is a result of the addition of Two-Factor Authentication and Single SIgn-On (SSO)

Login to account management has always done this when the IP address was unknown, but now a failed login triggers it too. Since SSO is in the launcher now, the launcher also acts the same.

It's pointless because it's asking you for a character name just to deliver the error message that the password was wrong. There is no difference between incorrect password + valid character name and incorrect password + wrong character name. You type up the character name to fail the login; same thing is accomplished faster by clicking cancel.

They should change the behavior to this:

- incorrect password -> Message: "Password was incorrect, try again." Back to the login screen.
- you try again and type the correct password -> Message: "You've had some failed login attempts, please type character name."
- valid character name -> log in.

I had it happen to me, i entered the correct password and i was on the same computer.

I got a warning that the IP was not recognized and i was asked the name of one of the characters on the account.

That is incredibly short-sighted.. Giving out the information that the password was incorrect also tells any attacker that the account's name is correct. The way it is now adds a layer of security and prevents people from finding account names by random searches.

Short-sighted would be if the system specifically says "the account name you entered does not exist". A "Wrong password" message whether the password or the account are wrong wouldn't give out any information. They could skip the error message entirely and just present the login screen again in complete silence.

ISPs sometimes change your IP address, since most are dynamically allocated rather than static.

This is happening to me a lot, I'd appreciate a fix CCP devs. Getting really tired of typing all my names in over and over when it has the right password just to be told "Invalid password" "Invalid character"

in a way relieving to see im not the only one to see this. just saying.

Usually when i have something break its unique to me and no one on the planet has any clue whats wrong/how to fix it (my in game assets window says hi - for around 2 years when i open it it only shows the icon of each item i own in a station, no text with the name or quantit, just the little picture. I have to know what i want by icon or i cannot find it)

As for the issue at hand here, it does seem to be tied into me hitting enter once i have my username/pass entered. it did it twice in a row yesterday before allowing me a clean log in (by pressing enter for the 3rd time).

Very random and weird

how does it work? Anyone knows that entering name is not needed anyway.
