Hi,

as you may noticed, apple is about to use it's own graphics API „Metal“ in the next Release of OS X.
Simplified: The Metal-API reduces much of the Overhead usually generated by the old multi-platform API Open-GL and, therefore, delivers way more performance for applications, games etc.
Today Metal is used on iOS.

I have no hope, that CCP will make any effort in using this thing directly on it's own - this would imply reimplementing the whole thing (a.k.a. „native mac client“) - that would be the early bird solution, if i may refer to my thread-subject.

but - there is one more player: transgaming (often referred to as „the partners“).
Simplified: Transgamings Cider making EVE on OS X possible by providing many Windows API stuff (including DirectX) to EVE, while actually using (translating) it to the underlying OS X APIs (including OpenGL).
I don't know any direct way of end-customer (player) communication to transgaming. However: i'am really curious if transgaming considers a metal-version of cider - if native apps benefit from it, why not the big tool to make those non-native-apps run?
That would be the second-mouse solution (for EVE) getting the delicious cheese after the cider-guys did all the bloody work :-D

speculate! delve the net!

If Transgaming used the new system, they would still have to keep the old one, for everyone with an old OS. They would have to maintain two sets of software, do regression testing on two sets and so on. Twice the work for no increase in pay.

As such, I expect they will do nothing until there can be a complete changeover. To be able to do a complete changeover, most all Mac users will have to not be using a old OS. That may take a few years.

They'd be stupid not to start work on it sometime soon, but otherwise, yeah.

You all probably saw the post about Transgaming selling off Cider.

As it stands - and with no word from CCP the current future of EVE looks grim for Mac users (unless we all go the way of wine)

Then again - I am really hoping that when CCP (forgot his name) replied a few weeks back that the future of EVE on Mac was looking good, that they already knew about the Cider change (as those kind of buy outs take time) and CCP was already in the works for A) a new partner, B) the new Cider owner agreed uphold the current contract ant to expand on it, or C) has moved to a in-house crew who are much better at providing support.
