Can't scan a cosmic signature, but can others?

with your skills and equipment they would be suspect first , but lets assume they are not the problem.

sometimes scanning can be a lil goofy for some odd reason. you will get a result or a group that no matter what will not get to 100%

this is a bug and what usually works is to recover probes dock/leave system/or logout and back in, reattempt.

also beware of echos/ false positives, especially those you tend to get right when your on the edge of a sig. being hardheaded and trying to chase down a echo will cause you quite a bit aggravation.

when ever you suspect an echo either broaden the probe range and try and decipher which two are possible the same signal .
then refocus and attempt to scan down those two signals the one that disappears from where it should be is the echo and you can then move the probes to where the other result should be approximately and 9 times out of 10 you will find the sig .

improving your scanning skills will aid in resolving these issues enabling you to spend less time second guessing your self and pinpointing those sigs.

good luck and have fun .

Yeah, it's crazy that anyone would use anything else but T1 and low skills.
What a waste of time and ISK to buy the expensive T2 gear and train up the skills to 5.

But skills don't matter!

If the cans were controlled by players and it was a pvp situation, to an extent I would agree.

But this is a PvE situation and the argument about pilot skill v character skill points isn't so relevant. In PvE skill points can be extremely important, especially for min/maxing.

I've been at this cosmic signature for about 10 minutes. I can't get it to go above 55.5%. It is a Data Site. I'm scanning it at 0.25 AU with pinpoint formation right where it is! I know where it is because every time I scan it it isn't moving, so I know where it is and I'm scanning it, but it isn't doing anything. I've been able to scan every other signature in the system. I know how to scan, so don't tell me I'm scanning wrong.

Does anyone know why this happens?

And if this is in the wrong subforum, I'm very sorry. This seemed like the place to put it.

Well you're scanning wrong. From the start even: it's a tool thing.

For all the reasons mentionned above by previous posters, whom you should thank by the way, it seems your expertise is not as impeccable as you thought.

Self-esteem is just like probes: it must be recalibrated regularly to pinpoint reality.

Here comes a time, ganker,

When blingfits cease to sparkle,

When hermophite looses its luster,

When the station hangar becomes a prison

And all that is left is a capsuleer's love for his fedo.

It's your skills (assuming that "you know how to scan" as you said).
Simply put you do not have the necessary scan strength to pinpoint that specific signature.
Astrometrics II is quite low if you plan going into exploration - train that at least to IV. Also the subsequent skills should be trained to at least III (Astrometric Rangefinding, Astrometric Pinpointing and Astrometric Aquisition).
I stopped having problems with this especially after Astrometrics V. :D

Also get a Sisters Core Probe Launcher and Sisters Core Scanner Probes (they will boost you scan strength A LOT when your skills are low). Jump into an Astero as soon as you can afford one (then again you know what they say about flying what you can't afford to lose).

Hope this helps and happy scanning!

P.S. Mail me for more details on exploration and scanning if you want - I might have an Astero lying around catching dust willing to give you, if you're looking to get into exploration and you prove to be a nice guy ;P (you're gonna have to fit it yourself thou, but I can provide a few pointers regarding that also).

train more, get better probes, sorry but it'll happen. It did to me when I first started exploration too.

But it never happened before. Is it that some are harder to do than others? Does this mean it has better stuff? On max it takes me 5 tries except this one.

You're probably looking at a sleep Cache of some sort, perhaps one if the larger ones if you're hsving such trouble. You would need top skills and very high end equipment to pin point it.

Remember Sisters equipment is tech 1 and therefore doesn't require max skills and can be a very good option, second they provide the best bonuses. Hint: get good equipment and great skills, even better!

Something else to that very few people bother with or remember, you can manually move your probes closer than the 0.25AU spacing by pressing and holding the "Shift" key and clicking and dragging your probes closer to the sig. That can make a big difference if you're really at the "minimum" on your distance settings, or so you think. It use to be you had to manual position all your probes one athat a time, none of this select a group and grab stuff.

One last thing. If you do run a sleeper cache, read up on it. They are an easy way to loose an expensively fitted ship. They are filled with traps, environmental dangers, and bad ass NPC's. I don't want to hear you whining in your next post, saying these sites are impossible. I've done them. Watch videos from Johnny Pew on YouTube.

I have all 4's, T2 bonused ship, sisters launcher, sisters probes. Still had to manually position some probes when scanning down a sleeper site last week.

I am waiting for someone to ask for a screenshot: Problem visualization; legitimacy;
