CCP just doesn't care.

People have brought up color-blindness concerns repeatedly in the past, and every single time CCP either ignored it or made some vague promises that never came to fruition.

I think they try to follow design principles that allow the game to be used by people with color-blindness (such as with the new Neocom icons) but they don't seem to test for that at all. It's a shame, because there are programs that let you do this so it's not like CCP would even need to hire someone who's colorblind just to test their UI.

They don't even need a program that does that, just desaturate those icons and check how visible the differences are on the background; then adjust accordingly.

I would think the UI designer would want to have as much contrast as feasible for the icons so that even people with unaffected vision would be able to see the difference between them.

Wait i'm a tad confused.

If you are pvping, couldn't you just set up your overview to get rid of all green, blu and purple, and just keep orange, red and neut? then basically anything on the overview you shoot?

You wouldn't need colors to differentiate anything, cause everything on the overview is fair game.

Or can;t you just adjust your own background colors on the overveiw so it will blink red is its a viable target? or blink blue, or purple, or orange or whatever?

I'm not color blind, so don;t have this issue, and the new icons don;t really bother me, but i guess i'm saying.. i don;t get issue? The icons have changed but the settings you used before when the icons were white and red should not of changed... so.. someone mind explaining the issue?

Not color blind but being in Faction Warfare I have had to setup my overview to avoid friendly fire on others that are in either Galmil or Minmatar FW that might have bad security status. The tools are there set the overview to over come most short coming in the game or visual limitations as the OP mentioned.

Yea.. i just don;t understand. if you had color blind issues before the icons changed, how did you handle it? The color of the icons are the same, they just changed shape and maybe the overview blends a bit.. but red is still red, and white is still white. So.. again the issue is what exactly?

I looked it up, I think he can't see certain colors at all so from his point of view the colors aren't even there on the screen. As someone else mentioned, if he can't see those mentioned colors he should change the color setup to associate someone with bad security (-5 or worse for example to another color) and adjust the other colors accordingly.

instead of using icon color to identify friend or foe you could use the background color, on the overview ofcoarse - doesn't work so well if you aren't using the overview. Personally while I'm not color blind, I do have a problem where the color white "glows" and is blurs into everything else, reading black text on a white background is nearly impossible, while reading white text on black background is just "fuzzy"

I think the real issue in the case as you mentioned is the font that CCP uses in the client.

Closing this thread with a direction to the mega thread where CCP is absent for hundreds of posts, as in "GET USED TO IT!" is going to be tough.

On topic, I cannot believe, I'm totally floored and disgusted that they didn't check how this icon disaster would affect those with color blindness.

Really, wtf CCP? Shocked

+1, for several reasons. These new icons appall me, how they made it past QA, I will never know.

New overview and icon changes are terrible, and unneeded.

There is widespread discontent.

I miss people on gates because they look like wrecks.

I'm not complaining that it's not possible to provide more information with the interface, but I am SURE that this is the WRONG way because it's NOT WORKING.

TEST Server feedback largely said the same thing.

This is ****.

New overview and icons are difficult and problematic. I hesitate at the login screen.

We told you in test server feedback this was ****.

Please revert.

Bombers need to see where to blues are in relation to the reds.
(So do logi pilots and anti-tackle)

No, they aren't.
How does this relate to color blindness?

If you can't differentiate between blue and red, why would you use blue and red to signify friendlies and hostiles?
More to the point, my overview icons are primarily all WHITE. Can he see white?

white have no problem. but imagine the overview totally un-usable by 200-300 red in grid.

imagine the clash of red fleet and blue fleet. imagine to have to choose the bomb point.
Imagine u cannot see in the middle of red fleet a part of blue gang, maybe brawler one. You can, in best scenario, see the main part of blu fleet by the ++ near icons and red for the -- but if , imagine, 10-20 blue are in the middle of red and the blue of background of icon is too shady, too transparent, few defined and i dont see. in fact i cannot see them.
maybe i can give the order to nuke in this point thinking no blue was in position but in fact i'm doing only a mess.

--

other hand.

imagine a tackler, with like 7k of speed in few second doing dozen and dozen of km , i have to chose in few second if tackle a hostile or disengage i need to read istantly the field and understand who is in brwaling with who and who is escaping and more.

in "overview" all we dont have blue but in many situation we need to know the position of blue in realtion with red to understand what to do in small gang, big fight and much more.

--

what i , and other colorblind, need is have the background color of the icon in space well defined, not shady, not blour, not anything. A defined high energy blu not mixed with background, ships model, and shadows.
The red in fact (i'm red\green color bling) is invisible , too much dark and not a shiny red like cherry red, non transparent, non shady, not blur, not shadowed.

the background color is the most necessary help we need.

The new icons are a joke, you cannot even easily distinguish between cruisers/battlecruisers/battleships anymore.

Similar to the new map; graphically appealing yet not functional at all - except the new icons aren't even graphically appealing.

We have 2015 after all, where factoring in color blindness in the design process should be pretty much standard. CCP fix this!
