Maybe Drifters are actually capsuleers that have been Missing in action in wormhole space for too long and none of the high sec empires remember who they are.

Engage the Warp Core while in a station? If you did you would no longer be in the station you would have warped somewhere. Of course if you returned there would be nothing left but rubble, since your warp field would have destroyed the station.
