Some good advice from above posts.

Consider flying system to system killing NPC frigates in the high-sec asteroid belts. Loot them. When you find a couple of NPC Tags (Dog Tags), you'll have few million isk, and you get a small tour of the EVE universe.

Also, take a few rookie ships to low-sec & null sec. Look around the place. Die a few times. Get over it. It's free experience. It's death tourism. Twisted

If your heart is set on mining read Mining - UnWiki.

On a re-read I want to offer alternate opinions on one topic that has come up.

The ISK/h is very low compared to alternatives and it gets boring very quickly. Only mine if you really like doing it.(some people find it relaxing)

Mining is pretty much the worst isk / hour in game.

I disagree with these comments. For new players mining in a Venture can and often is one of the most profitable ways to spend time in game, easily surpassing the ISK/Hr available from level 1 and level 2 missions. Is it better than the explorations they advise?? that all depends on whether lady luck is smiling on you or crapping on your face. Yes it can be,and then again it might not be, but I do know that they only way to find out is go out there and try it.

Mining is steady income but its a long slog to Mining Barge for a brand new player.

Given how effective a Venture can be I do not recommend anyone waste the time to train for a mining barge unless mining is the path they want to follow in this game.

The problem with mining is that it is boring and people will grow bored and quit EVE.

OP, read up on corps that cater to new players, join one, pod yourself to their space (or try flying there), and let them get you oriented in the game. This is a complicated game and getting with other people is critical to your success. And its fun!
