Erm, you're a robot with no sense of humour and probably no soul, and you only post to sadistically pick apart the arguments of people who aren't your intellectual equal.

Why would you even notice the cavorting of people having fun for the sake of it?

RP:ers don't cavort. They frolic. Kind of like fluffy little bunnies before they are made into soup. That would also serve as an explanation for why so few seems to have found any fun in it.

About whom are you talking ?
People who identify with their spacechar or roleplayers ?

No, that's not the same.

Someone who identifies with his spacechar will go "HOW DARE YOU INSULT MY PRIDE !! I AM THE PRINCE OF ALL SAYJANS!!!" and then attack you heavily with his words, while the roleplayer yells "AND THIS IS WHY THE FEDERATION MUST BE DESTROYED!!" and then posts funny pics in OOC ! (Diana, I will never stop mentioning your awesomeness! ^_^)

Hmm, interesting I've not heard of such a dish before, but now that you mention it I can quite imagine it would be the kind of dish that you would eat. *chuckles*

What you should do is the following: Invite your better half ( the part that is at times succesfull ) for a nice dinner. Woo her with a wallowing of nice food, drink and trinkets. Give her all the best you have inside and outside the bedroom. And if you listen very carefully you will hear her moan "aloof"

On a more serious note, as mentioned in my edit after re-reading the quotes in context, I think this is the basic confusion with the original article. He seems to use it more in the former sense than in the latter, whereas I'm willing to bet that most EVE players associate the term more with the latter use than with the former.

I do like a bit of immersion. I for one love the background stories in EVE and the pre-existing lore created by the Almighty Developers. It gives us as capsuleers a nice foundation to utterly destroy with our immortal and unyielding 'revolution' against the empires. So, I feel that New Eden's backstory as well as the capsuleers' story can exist in harmony... or violence. You get the idea.

In regards to roleplaying etiquette, however: There are too many 'godmodders' in New Eden. Lol

And with that I am off.

I didn't yet read the article. It seems obvious to me.
Now I got to read your edits and the damn article as well .......

And yeah I agree on the last part. I guess that's a common misunderstanding,
like the difference between cybersex and erotic roleplaying.

It also doesn't help that he interviews a couple of well-known RP:ers (second sense) to describe the evolution of the game — that makes it quite easy to jump to the conclusion that this is the meaning will be consistently used throughout the article.

It's The Guardian article I refused to read the last time I came across it.
It's painfull to read and even scrolling over most text doesn't help, because it's huge !

Anyway I would like to point out that the people with psychological issues should somehow be addressed.
I love how you mention the meta-weapon in that edit on the first page. These people are a danger to the game.

Cavort apparently also means 'go places and do things' as well as frolic, which is a bit worrying.

Tippia wrote:

I meant ingame, but fine. Foruming is a strange hobby, and I'm not sure doing it well should be a lifestyle choice. Forumkings are smart at saying the right thing to the right audience. I'd rather see people challenge everybody, all the time with their ideas. Even if it means saying the wrong thing, or being clumsy. If it annoys people; good. I'd rather interract with people who disagree, but do so with good humour.

EvE did initially atract people who were interested in fanfic/lore - and some of it was OK (I was looking for MailDeadDrop's in character thing and Sherrif Jones thread but it's annoying to find atm). Check CAOD from inception to present and there's a clear shift from people semi-RPing, but maintaining a posting framework etiquette, to that subforum dying. Molle's 'Karma' post had clear RP elements to it as do some of the Pimperium announcements now, we've just rebranded them as 'propaganda'. The groups who came in and quite literally instructed their players to shitpost did have an impact on the original core playerbase. A lot of older players left in disgust because they felt the game was being overrun by people with juvenile attitudes. People should post if they have something worthwhile to say, or for fun, but actively shitting on people is toxic. Prob is posting to be a toxic shitlord is now some sort of achievement.

It's something that needs to be more seriously addressed, but on this one I think CCP are ahead of the curve, and I'm guessing it's coming from former players who are now devs.

You forgot to mention the glue sniffing.

I still don't know the origins of this attitude towards them ...
I actually introduced Hengle there. I believed it does him good and it does.

Hey, come to think of it ... I introduced three people there and they stick.

I regret that.

That is the hilarious paradox of it all: leaving because others have a “juvenile attitude” is itself a remarkably juvenile attitude, and it rather shows that they were the Type-I sort or of roleplayers rather than the Type-II kind.

If any Type-II RP:ers left, it was because they eventually figured out that the lore isn't really something that works to play against in EVE since it has largely being treated as a backdrop for the other type of lore: the history of player activity. EVE actually has a lot of room for proper RP:ing, but it relies on not being too vested in the dev-created NPC stuff. If you ignore that, you can probably RP more in EVE than in any other game on the market but at the same time, the ready-made lore is what everyone is used to from every other game. In a sense, it's a repetition of a very similar problem with P&P RPGs, where the more the publisher pushes out splat books and rule complements, the less room there will eventually be for player and GM creativity.

So I'm not entirely sure I buy the idea that it was the goons (or indeed any player group) that supposedly made Type-II RP:ers leave. I'd rather point my finger at the sharp and unexpected divide between static and dynamic lore creation and how inconsistently the NPC lore has been treated. The Type-I RP:ers would have left anyway, because they always do — it's a play style and pomposity that invites mockery (with the inevitable rage-quit response) wherever and whenever it appears.

Solvent Green ... he.

I love Marsha. She's attractive and smart. She's also kind of an ass,
which totally collides with me being an ass. We'd have tons of fun in bed, though !

Anyhow ... don't want to derail this thread, even though Marsha definitely is worth it.
