So tonight i did some elitenullsec pvp and rained down some damps and helped kill a Vagabond, a Munnin and a Huginn in Fountain.

I lost 2 Mauluses, a couple velators and an empty pod.

So what is "worth it" to you personally? ?
To me those 5 losses were "worth it" cuz i helped destroy 3 T2 ships worth over a half billion.

Some people HATE dying though and never consider it "worth it" if they die.
Ithers like PL and BL will lose 200mill ships in exchange for 10 2mill frig kills and say the Good-Fight was "worth it" to them.

So whats "worth it" to you?

If my death results in a kill that is worth more than my loss... it is worth it.

If you had fun then it's worth it. If you had no fun then it wasn't.

Simple as that, really.

I've lost ship after ship without a kill before, but was screaming and laughing my ass off the whole time (worth it). On the other hand, I've done structure bashes where I killed a big thing and lost no ship, yet was so ******* bored I was ready to quit the game (not worth it).

Even if I fail to destroy my target I consider the fight worth it if it was fun.
Doubly so if my opponent turned out to be just as excited as me about the battle.
Considering most of my targets are 'PvE' minded folks that's not super common, but it's like triple word score in Scrabble when it happens.
It's so refreshing to get an 'OMG that was AWESOME!' in local rather than a stream of abuse and invective.

Also, my ship was destroyed the moment I hit undock. It just hasn't happened yet. Or maybe it has.
Either way, I think you know what I mean. Every ship is on borrowed time, just waiting for the hammer to fall... what matters is how much joy you can squeeze out of it before it's inevitable explosion.

My favorite of all time was a flip against a brutix who turned out to have buddies who were also missioning in system.
Next thing I know my incursus is going up against two brutixes... and then an augorer as well.
Of course I died in a fire, but it took a surprisingly long time...
If only they could have heard me cackling like a maniac the whole time.
Best part was their glee at having won, coupled with the fact that it was a three week old newbro who landed the killshot.
I can only hope I piqued their interest in the joys of exploding other people. Pirate

I don't get the whole "the other guy lost more than I did therefore it was worth it" thing. I mean, if you enjoyed it, that makes it worth it by itself. But "I just lost 500 mil but the other guy lost a bil so yay, go me?" ... all of my wat.

I fought the Goons and the Goons won... and it was lots of fun.
Participated in a gank, couple of days later quickly discovered a killright against me... that was entertaining trying to dodge being shot... and failing.
Quick trips home are fun too. :)

As an adrenalin junkie I think it must be the adrenaline/endorphin rush. This starts soon as I take that gate into low or undock in null and it lasts until I blow up. In EVE I can't break any bones or spike my insurance premiums.. so it is a cheap way of getting this fix.

Some people find killboard stats to be important (like high scores in any arcade game). This is not my motivation yet (because I'm not good at PVP), but I can respect that.. and I won't deny I might turn into a killboard OCDer one day.

It used to be the number of kills in any engagement that determined the winner, then it started to turn over the years to where isk destroyed not the number of kills was the winning tally but for me now I want my kills or deaths to mean something but I find that that doesnt happen. After 12 years its just a slower WoTs to me in that regard which is a shame imo on a personal level rather than its the games fault.
So I guess not much is worth it anymore to me which is probably why I sit in station for the most part and chat with people I have met over the years.

That being said over the years looking back what was worth it were the stories the kills or losses generated. That held meaning for the future and at the time didnt even know it yet. I could care less about my killboard, but those stories I find I revisit more often in my mind these days as Im not finding them so much these days at all anymore.

Have you heard anything I've said?

You said it's all circling the drain, the whole universe. Right?

That's right.

Had to end sometime.

It's worth it if you win the objective.
Or if you didn't win the objective, at least you won the isk war.
Or if you didn't win the isk war, at least you had fun.

Some months ago a corp mate and I were messing around with MWD long point beam executioners he'd theory crafted. We had been practicing manual piloting for about an hour and decided to pop through a null sec WH near our home. Couple jumps in we find a PVE Ishtar and engage. We were doing the whole double click to maneuver thing for a minute or two (felt like an hour) and finally I derpped and got scram-ed and dead. The Ishtar pilot was having trouble though since he didn't seem to have a flight of light drones. I head home to reship.

My buddy had to disengage to stay alive, but the fight continued as he ended up following my buddy back through the WH, by which time I was on grid with another corpy in a Stabber. This time I do a better job of double click fu and don't die right away. The Stabber however died in a fire to the Ishtar's sentries. While our two Execs kept pecking, the ishtar pilot mosied on over to the Stabber's Warriors, picked em up and sic-ed em on us. Big WTF from the both of us as we died (didn't notice soon enough). I reship to a Slicer this time (bad choice, believe me I know) and die again another minute or two later. Corpy died again as well. All of us dead and w/o any fit ships left to throw at this Ishtar we retire and salute the pilot for a fantastic fight.

As embarrassing as it was, we had a blast and my buddy ended up talking to our opponent for a little while after. Apparently he was pretty near death at that point since he had burned out both his Shield extenders.

TL; DR

Sometimes spankings are fun for the spankee. As the others have said, if it's fun and you get a cool story out of it it's worth it.

Grrr.

Types of PVP and worth.

  1. Assassination / Gank = Attack other player in a way that they can't defend (often, can't even fight back) - See CODE
  2. Blob = Bring so many people that the average damage done is about 100 on each kill mail. - See CFC
  3. PVP = You have enough people to get the job done. Both sides will receive losses.
  4. Elite PVP = You
bring far less players than the other side, but win via better META / cohesive fleet doctrine

I prefer #3 and #4. ISK loss is pointless to me. Bane of the game muppets that get aroused by ISK

Everyone should just log out and play another game if #2 is forming. Thanks CCP, problem is you, not the players.

I'd only do #1 if it was personal. Sometimes, you just have to throw your ship away to ensure they lose theirs too.

So, Worth is very relative. Appreciate the question OP :)

If it's not fun with friends, it's worthless (not pointless, just entertainment value is lost).

There are good ships,

And wood ships,

And ships that sail the sea

But the best ships are Spaceships

like somepeople in here say, win or loose it worth it. Now the question is do you understand what happend in the fight. Like if you loose try to answer the following question:

Why did I loose?
Why did I engage in this combat ?
What should i done differently ?
Was my enemy brawling or kitting ?
Was my enemy neuting or dpsing ?

try to understand what happen in the fight. Don't get frustrated all fight worth it.
