It was just a minor stroke

That's what the doctors said.

Then I looked my dad in the face, and told him I loved him.

He said, "I love you too, son. Go do something amazing with your life."

And then he didn't say anything again.

He turned 96 today. He was a medic with the 1st Infantry division in WW2. The Big Red 1.

He saved people's lives at Normandy Beach, The Battle of France, The Battle of the Bulge, The Hürdgen Forrest.

He was incredible. Amazing. A better person than I will ever be.

I'm sorry for your loss.

My dad had one of those a few months into a major argument between us, last year. It ended the argument, and I'm very lucky he's still around.

I can totally see how you wouldn't want to let this float.

Thank you for letting it go this time.

I found my father, collapsed on the floor. He was conscious, and responsive, but unable to move or speak. He had probably been there for several hours.

My mother also similarly collapsed, but it was days before the neighbors noticed the mail and newspapers piling-up, and discovered her.

I can't imagine having to go through that again, but I know I will. They both survived, and I'm incredibly fortunate to have some more time, though I know it won't be much more.

I've had the odd nightmare since discovering my father. My father has threatened that I won't find him collapsed like that again.

Death isn't something to be feared, as it is unavoidable. However emotion overwhelms sensibility where a loved one is concerned.

I myself have recently experienced the symptoms of minor strokes, so I doubt I will endure as long as my parents have. I selfishly hope somebody will remember me, as I have no children, no legacy, no proof I was here. Your father is fortunate to have you to remember him fondly.
