I was just wondering if anyone knows the total number of different items in eve online?

If you mean the total number of each different type (ie. total sum of all items) only CCP would have that; but if you just mean hpw many different types are in the game, then Steve Ronuken's csv list of typeIDs is the most up to date player kept list I think:

http://www.fuzzwork.co.uk/resources/typeids.csv

That would be a good starting point, to then filter out what you don't want to include (eg. sun, moon, planet, stargate, etc.)

You can also access the types through crest and parse the result:

http://public-crest.eveonline.com/types/

http://public-crest.eveonline.com/types/?page=1 (1 - 25)
