I turned down my monitor brightness to help with this, but it turns out doing that can actually make it worse. What I didn't know was that the flickering on a monitor with PWM (pulse width modulation) backlight gets worse when you dim the screen.

You can test this by pointing a camera at your monitor whilst changing the brightness setting. I use a Benq G2222HDL monitor and if I set the brightness below 40%I start to see the dark horizontal lines flickering on the camera which is undetectable to my eyes, but which causes me serious eyestrain headaches.

Yep, it sure does. I keep telling people this all the time. PWM dimmed monitors are absolutely hell on your eyes. Thankfully newer models are starting to use DC dimmed LEDs and that has eliminated the issue. Only way to get around it for PWM LED is to have the monitor at 100% brightness but then they are way too bright to look at.

Newer benQ monitors have non PWM as well as the new Dell Ultrasharp series monitors, some Samsung and Acer ones too.
I have posted this list before, it's a start but it's not exhaustive. A Lot of the ones that don't have PWM usually advertise it as a selling point too.

Currently typing this on a Dell P2415Q and I have no problems with it. It uses DC to control the dimming and it's a night and day difference to me. The high DPI of the screen also helps quite a bit too as text and everything is much clearer and sharper compared to a standard 1080p screen. I have a hard time looking at my 2nd 1080p screen now after using this 4k screen, looks very grainy to me now. Ya know that screen door effect. Lol
