A few of you may remember my thread which detailed my Nereus baiting adventures. Upon joining the ranks of the Tuskers, baiting has sadly become a lot harder for me. Forced to rethink my often puerile combat techniques, I have begun to move into bigger and more capable combat vessels.

I have wanted to fly battleships for a while now, it is only recently though that I felt comfortable enough in my skill set to take some for a ride. Last night I took out my second Battleship for a long roam and had a fantastic run of luck. This was entirely in contrast to my previous attempt, which ended in abject misery as I looked up at the pointy end of Overload everything bombers...Such is Eve.

Dominix Loss Mail

Moving swiftly onward I enjoy writing and thought some of you may also enjoy reading what I have documented below.

A Roam I’ll Remember

I undocked the elaborately named “Domi” deep in Minmatar faction warfare. The goal was to reach Amarr faction warfare and begin the night’s escapades with my friend in his Raven class battleship. My ever diligent scout forwarded me the location of a nice chain of wormholes which I put to good use bypassing the more sweltering areas, resulting in a largely uneventful trip down.

Arriving in Kamela with some time to kill I had my scout pop into Sosala. With a deranged grin he reported a small gate camp that consisted of a Vexor, Omen, Confessor, Hyena and two Exequrors. I promptly undocked the potato, jumped the gate and aligned waiting for them to engage. They did with gusto and as fast as my lock speed would allow, I staggered two heavy neuts on an Exequror whilst simultaneously putting DPS on the Vexor. He melted quicker than I could have hoped and I switched DPS to the Exequror who was not receiving neut treatment. Following his friends example he dropped like a sack of excrement and I promptly switched across to the final Exequror. I was only too happy to oblige his apparent determination to join his friends in egg land, and after a short while he did just that.

It was at this point the Omen and Confessor left grid. Casually perusing the wrecks around me as I aligned out, I raised a quizzical eyebrow at an elite frigate wreck. The remains as it turned out of a proud Hyena who refused to leave grid under sustained gate fire, diligently performing his duty to the end.

My friendly neighborhood Capsuleer at this point, let me know his Raven was ready and was a mere 6 Jumps out. So off the scout went dancing merrily into the void with his faithful spud in tow.

The journey over was quiet. Fortunately my friendly Raven decided to keep me well entertained on long range communications, letting forth frankly majestic and colorful displays of swearing in a tireless attempt to catch a Drake. As any wise pilot knows the Drake, is always bait. His reluctance to leave system confirmed our suspicions, and I held on gate awaiting his backup.

“A Myrmidons landing!” Quoth the Raven, I could tell he was smiling even across the vacuum of space. I jumped and warped to assist as another Myrmidon appeared on long range scans.

To his credit, the Myrmidon tanked our combined DPS along with three heavy energy neutralisers with a skilful and savage ferocity before succumbing. The drake was next for the grinder and we split points to ensure nothing escaped. It was a hollow victory, we expected more reinforcements and frankly I was panged with guilt as they were totally overwhelmed.

Even though one of them had the chance to save himself, they all committed with an honor so rarely found new Eden, earning our respect for what little it is worth.

Whilst we were fully immersed in hauling their carcasses back to station, as well as sorting through any useful cap charges and ammo, an Orca popped up on scan.

“At a POS no doubt” I arrogantly muttered, foolishly paying it little more attention. Scouts were sent forward to decide our next route and their heads almost snapped off swiveling round as they passed the space whale on gate.

Long before I had even suggested we give chase, the Magpie (read Raven) was enroute gleefully chasing his shiny target. The much faster scouts kept good tabs on his progress towards the grave and noted he was about to jump into Huola.
As he jumped we feared he would reach the safety of high security space before we could reach him. Three Amarr Navy Tristans however had other ideas, pointing him long enough for us to jump through. With all the grace and agility that a space potato can muster, I pushed him off gate whilst rapid heavy missiles and heavy drones tore him asunder. Thanking the Tristans the only way we know how (with fire and brimstone) we killed what else we could and warped off to station.

Why can't I find idiots wandering through lowsec in orcas?

Or if they are going to PLEX to buy a faction battleship they could have the common decency to equip another PLEX worth of shiny mods.

Before departing Huola in search of further pastures green we took the time to assess our cargo holds. The poaching of the great space whale and other skirmishes had put a reasonable dent in our stocks of ammunition and capacitor boosters. A scout was poked awake from his slumber and he begrudgingly trudged off to the trade hub of Amarr, upon his return we excitedly opened our presents and undocked once more into the black.

It was at this point we were joined by a Tuskers Svipul, who became our eyes and ears as well as another set of pointy teeth. This also had the added benefit of letting our tired scouts have a much deserved break. It was quite late at this point and the allure of a warm cup of hot chocolate and a bed time story was in our minds, but we continued on unabated.

Not 5 minutes later an animated crackle over our communication network confirmed a smattering of frigates supporting two Cyclone class battlecruisers, loitering with malicious intent on a medium plex. Our Raven with his normal jubilant exuberance jumped into the fray to join the Svipul who was already taking his pound of flesh. My beautiful Tuber held on gate before jumping to see what all the commotion was about when points were called. The first Cyclone dropped under overwhelming DPS before I even landed on grid and the other followed in kind. The 4-5 frigates fled as the Svipul turned his blood shot eyes on them and gave chase.

Another overwhelming fight for our opponents, but given an inch people will invariably take a mile. Not to mention there is always a bigger fish in the vast ocean of New Eden and whilst our luck held for now, it would not forever…

Cyclone 1: https://zkillboard.com/kill/46310018/
Cyclone 2: https://zkillboard.com/kill/46310034/

Onward we trudged and scared a Rattlesnake, Ishtar and N Auguror out of a 5/10 DED site. Sadly they knew how to use D-Scan and made haste as our bloodthirsty Svipul landed. The N Aug however possessed by some true grit or incurable madness decided to warp to a Large plex and engage our Svipul, who quickly made short work of him.

A few systems over we also encountered a Navy Omen who confidently sat inside a medium plex. We exhausted ourselves fruitlessly in attempts to push each other through the acceleration gates, deciding a resulting diet was a good idea. After some quite rude abuse in local our Svipul popped inside to defend our honor and send him on his way.

N Aug: https://zkillboard.com/kill/46310367/
N Omen: https://zkillboard.com/kill/46310895/

Tiredness crept through our veins but we decided on a few more jumps before we turned in for the night. It was upon jumping into Iesa that our jaws dropped at the resulting D-Scan. A nightmare was somewhere in space and most certainly not at a station.

Our minds raced with the possibilities, dead space anomalies were checked, plexes scouted and finally combat probes dropped to ascertain his location. Nothing, he was warping around too much to catch him.

Suddenly I hit him on a 5 degree scan at an old abandoned outpost. The Svipul hurtled through space as we discussed the fact this was likely bait. Our normally gracious Svipul closed to get tackle cursing at the recently imposed Concord speed limit. Fortunately the Nightmare was tackled none the same and we warped our lumbering battleships into glory or doom.

Fate as it turns out had played us another lucky card. The nightmare held briefly but the neutralisers did their job and sucked his capacitor dry. No support ever came.

Nightmare: https://zkillboard.com/kill/46311097/

We finally turned in for the night, agreeing to head out the next evening to meet our maker. But that is a story for another time.

Before I threw myself into the comforting embrace of the mighty space potato’s leather recliner, I took a moment to recall the previous night’s efforts. They came to me awash with a mixture of feelings, on the one hand I was satisfied with the carnage my vessel had wrought, on the other I knew all good things must end. I was panged by a sudden sadness as I realised that tonight we may part, never to see each other again amongst the black.

You see whilst wise Capsuleers view ships as expendable, they would do well to remember that individually they deserve our respect. Tirelessly they offer their lives, shielding us from the harshness of space and asking for little more than to be fed with ammo, drones and cap boosters. We watch in awe as everyday they forge stories of victory or defeat, often burning brighter than the many suns of New Eden, before we invariably extinguish them in fire. All too easily we forget the individual trials and tribulations they endure to the ravages of time, our only ongoing memory to their boundless exploits a cold calculation of monetary cost.

Undeterred and thankful for his service, I called for “Domi” to begin the undocking process. Flanked by my ever faithful Raven and joined by a stalwart Typhoon, we warped off together to once more wander aimlessly among the stars.

Our forward scout had reported heavy gang activity all around the neighboring Amarr area. Disliking the odds we requested a wormhole to be found to a more palatable location, and soon one was plotted which would take us to infamous Black Rise cluster. As is often the case the grass is rarely greener, and we soon found ourselves preparing to fight a twenty strong gang of destroyers.

They landed like a swarm of locus and our Typhoon felt the full brunt of sustained and co-ordinated fire. The initial Alpha volley proved too much for his active tank and he succumbed, his lower resist profile than that of our Raven proving to be his downfall. Furious as we watched our friend envelop in blinding light we began tearing thrashers off field, only slowed by our struggle to lock onto their low signature radiuses.

Quickly losing count of the Thrashers that we left smoldering before us it was not long before they warped off to regroup. We made a decision at this point to remain on gate as all of the points dropped of us, defiant to the risk. Fresh destroyers shortly swarmed in alongside logistic repair ships to sustain the larger vessels now being thrust upon us.

Like a bastion of strength in the darkness the Ravens tank held against the onslaught and soon beady eyes turned to my Dominix. They tested his tank and found it wanting. The armour buffer held well enough bolstered by the ancillary repair that worked tirelessly to mend the incoming fire. But it was a mere matter of time before the inevitable core breach.

Opening communications I informed the Raven I would not last much longer and he informed me he had a small window of opportunity to leave grid.

“Agreed get out if you can, I’ll hold them off” His micro warp drive spooled up and I grinned as his ship flew through the twilight to safety, leaving me alone to my fate.

The sound of artillery rounds cascading violently against the reinforced steel plating grew louder, increasing to a roaring crescendo. Alarms screamed as the proud battleships armour failed and rounds streamed onto the hull directly, the end was near and i had but a moment to say a parting word.

"Goodbye my friend"

I had actually posted the requisition form for the new Dominix a few weeks back. It was however only a few days ago that a member of secure commerce commission contacted me. Spitting down the comms link he flat out refused to believe that a space Badger could cause “that kind of damage” and that it "looked like artillery fire to him". My counter point was that having never met a space Badger, he was unqualified to refuse my application.

Content with my blatant insurance fraud I sipped my coffee and traced the mechanics slow shuffling across the space port, keys in hand he eyed me suspiciously before handing them over. Happily undocking I plotted a course over to Sosala and crashed through a small instant lock Svipul gate camp that scattered on my arrival.

My directional scan indicated a Hurricane undocking so I warped over to check it out at the station. A quick head count revealed that they only had 3 members of their corp in local. I watched them undock a Vigilant and Svipul to join the Hurricane and decided to take the engagement as they opened fire. It was at this point I shivered as a large shadow fell over me, caused as it turns out by a Moros class Dreadnought. Like a child caught with his hand in the cookie jar, I pulled damage in the hope of re docking. As the first volley tore through my armor I frantically dialed the secure commerce commission.

“You guys are never going to believe this”

“A space what!?”

“Duck, Space duck and right bloody vicious they are to”

I think that Dominix fit is the best solo armor brawler you can squeeze out of it all things considered. It boasts close to 150,000 ehp with mid grade glaves and gains 50,000 ehp after 8 ancil cycles, with a high chance of getting a reload. The merits of a reactive armor hardener instead of the 2nd EANM could be definitely be argued successfully though.
