They need to make a derivative work out of it. That way the owner retains copyright of his own, original image and CCPs gets to own the rights of the derivative work.

Every other constellation doesn#t work. Who would give his alliancelogo 8which he might use in other games as well) to CCP, and facing the problem that CCP could decide you are not longer allowed to use it? On the other hand, CCP can not have the risk that allliances at some point decide CCP might not use their logo anymore, as this would force them to remove it from the client and an important part of EVE would be lost.

Hence the derivative work. Read the dev blog, it is explained in there.

Please cite the fact where it says ccp will open microsoft paint and spraypaint gray ontop of logo like a 3rd grader. Can you link that part?

Did you read the part where they explained these were just samples and may not reflect the actual finished logos, which is one of the reasons for the currently on going threadnaught on "Can you give us actual examples?"

Oh okay. So derivative work means open MS Paint, choose praypaint brush 2 and click randomly over pic with grey color? LoL

It is one of the ways you can alter the logo. Would you rather have them change something way more significant, like color?

It's a change that doesn't dilute the original 'feel' of the logo, but instead makes it a bit more.. well, rough? And it can be applied in the same way to every logo, which means that it is easier to do it fair.

If you do other changes that need to be done differently for every logo, it creates much more work and it only makes everone complain why his logo was changed in way X and the other alliances logo was changed in way Y. With this change, you simply do it to all logos and are done.

You won't even notice that in game when the logo is 1/4 the size.

They all seem readily identifiable to me. I am not quite sure what the problem people have here. Its not like CCP is remaking alliance logos, they are simply changing it enough to satisfy the folks over in the legal department...a little MS Paint does that.

**** if CCP wanted they could just tell everyone to **** off and choose a logo from the available options.

Ummmmm.........The adding of the CCP logo is self explanatory.

The "Grey MS Paint " effect is to represent the wear and tear of space travel and the hard use of combat ships.

Nah Reddit folks are whining about it. More than EVEO. Maybe thats where this guy got the idea from, since this same discussion and same image was on Reddit a couple days ago, and it got some nice up votes, OP probably trying to parlay that into likes here.

I am a rich ass capsuleer. There are hundreds if not thousands of redshirts on my ships. If my logo gets a scratch, im sending their ass outside in a spaceship to repaint my logo and fix my scratch. Hell the us navy has thousands of people whos only job is to paint their ships.

There's a simple solution - don't submit a new logo if you don't like CCP's process.

In fact, you know what? Really stick it to them. Hit them where it hurts and unsub. THAT will show those bastards.

What do you want CCP to do? Redesign your logo so it doesn't look like your logo?

If it has to be derivative enough for them to be able to claim copyright on it, then a texture over the top seems to be about the least intrusive way to do it so that it still maintains the Alliance identity.
