Character and screen layout setting lost after client crashes

After a client freeze or socket error, sometimes (6x so far) my character settings resets like back to day one.
A market settings gone, custom overview gone, window positions gone, chat channels gone, module position reset. Basically all customization gone and the tutorial is back! Cry
(ESC menu settings are all still fine)

It's quite annoying to set all this back up, and it's not just this character or client. About an hour ago, 4 of us all disconnected or crashed at same time. 2 of us lost all our settings, 1 unaffected, and other lost some of his settings.

Now that's 3 characters, each with their own set of game files, so not a specific computer setup or hardware.

The file that seems to be getting recreated is "core_char_########.dat" ..... it seems to have gone from about 11kB to 3.7kB.

After setting up character again, can this file be backed up and then restored after one of these instances??? Maybe a weekly backup to catch changes.
Can a backup of these files be restored without corrupting the client? Question
