Trouble scanning down gas sites

I'm new to the game. Been playing for about 4 months and decided to try gas prospecting. I have a Prospect and am hunting around in null sec. Gas is hard to find but I found 2. The first was in a worm hole. I got it scanned down to 100% but the warp to arrow never came up and I couldn't warp to the site. I gave up and found another in null sec. This one was a real headache. I messed around with it for about 45 minutes and finally gave up. I got it to about 75% and couldn't do any better.

I've read the guides on the internet and I've scanned down worm holes and data sites without too much difficulty. It takes me a little longer than most I guess but I get the job done. I figure I'll get better with practice.

Are some sites more difficult that others, or are there some tricks that I don't know about? Is there something I can get for the ship that would help?

Astrometrics level 4
Astrometric Pinpointing level 3
Astrometric Rangefinding level 2

Thanks,

I huff in wormholes, find the gas sites are more frequent in WHs. Outside of perfect scanning skills and a Sisters launcher with Sisters probes there really isn't much you can do other than keep trying. Some sites are more difficult to scan down and that's where the higher skills come into play. Lots of deviation on a signal can really wreck your scan attempts.

You can get some mid slot scan enhancement mods but I don't really think they're worth it. Time, patience and good skills are really it.

New Eden isn't nice. It isn't friendly. It isn't very hospitiable. Good thing there are people here to shoot in the face.

you want scan probe strength. I'd get range finding up if I were you. Also your ship and skill for that ship matters use a ship that has bonus to scan probes. Aside from what Freya wrote there are also rigs and implants that can help. I'll try to compile and off the top of my head list:
-Your scanning skills
- Your ship skills
- T2 or faction launcher bonus
- Faction probe bonus
- rigs
- implants
- modules

Also not sure which probes you are using but you want core probes not combat probes.

I want to add a note about deviation. From my experience if deviation is an issue for you then you will loose the signal when you go down on range a level. Other than that increased deviation just makes it easier and / or faster. But if you are talking about absolute ability to lock down a signal to 100% I don't think extra deviation helps. However I'm not an expert scanner any more. Things have changed a bit since my wormhole days.

Finally got it. Pinpoint formation. That was the ticket. That and kicking up Astrometric Range finding one more point. Thanks for the response.

Like I said in the above post, I thought I had it. But not. I was in the Pegasus region yesterday, looking for gas sites. I found one and spent a half hour trying to scan it down. Got it to 60% and no farther. I thought, to hell with this and scanned down a wormhole instead. I took about a minute. So it looks like I'm not lacking skills. In the wormhole I found a gas site and scanned it down very quickly. There were some rats there, and my Prospect isn't very good at handling those yet, so I had to give it up.

So I was wondering what the deal was with gas sites in Pegasus that are not in wormholes. Are some cosmic signatures more difficult than others, or is that part of the game broken?

Thank you,

Yes, different sigs have different difficulty.

There are a few things besides skills

-sisters launcher
-sisters probes (doesn't require the sisters launcher - always worth it)
-rigs (gravity capacitor upgrade rig)
-midslot scanning upgrade modules
-various implants

Edit: Should have read Erg's post more carefully Ugh

Also keep in mind the hardest sites are designed to scan down using a bonused ship with decent skills so a prospect will be difficult to use without some of the above or very good skills. Don't forget you can scan with a bonused ship (exploration frig or covert ops) and then switch to the prospect to mine (obviously depends on your location and access to ships).

Yeah it's char skills, not your ability to scan them.

There are some sites where it seems to be impossible to scan without all level 5 skills and faction probes and launchers on a bonused ship with gravity cap rigs.
