Just getting into basic PI and have my 1st farm all set up and running smoothly, my question is once the resources in this particular part of the planet start to deplete can i off line and move my existing structure to another part of the planet and if so does this incur a cost?

thanks

You can move extractor heads, if you destroy and rebuild any buildings it'll have a cost.

1. move extracctor heads, that's free - as in no ISK
2. if there are no resources at all in reach of the extractor, you can destroy it, make new and connect it to rest of your infrastructure. For this you have to pay the building cost.
3. In order to avoid excessive powergrid usage for long connections between buildings, keep them as short as possible. That's important especially on gas planets, which tend to have large radius - that means huge distances between buildings that are not obvious on planet maps.
4. you can destroy all the buildings except control center, build them elsewhere on the planet (at a cost). The control center DOES NOT HAVE to be connected to rest of infrastructure, so you can move your colonies across the planet freely to pursuit the elusive material deposits.

Keep in mind that some of the PI buildings are more expensive than others. For details see here. As others have said, extractor heads are free, and ECUs are almost painless to destroy as well, since they cost only 45,000 ISK to replace. Basic processors are only 75,000 ISK. Costs escalate with higher level processors and storage facilities, with launchpads being the most expensive replaceable building at 900,000 ISK. I say "replaceable", because the command center is easily the most expensive building, but there is no good reason to destroy it unless you are abandoning the planet. Remember that if you need to destroy and rebuild a storage facility or launchpad you need to do something with the contents first. It isn't usually worth worrying about the contents of a processor as they only hold one cycle's worth of materials at a time.
