I have been wondering ... what if there is a small key that clients send to connect and if that is not sent then the connection is quickly refused and that IP barred for X minutes?
What would stop them just sending the small key with the DDOS packets?
There are numerous ways to counter a DDOS, the problem is there's no surefire way to prevent it. Given enough information and resources people will still be able to DDOS the servers.
A new key could be picked up with a valid account log in.
