Do they need user input or no?

Sometimes i'll have to hit the hotkey for them to engage wrecks and other times they'll automatically salvage the field for me.What? (Within drone control range).

You'll have to start them once and you should not have anything targeted. Then they will salvage all wrecks available on field.
If you start them on a wreck you have targeted, they will just salvage this wreck and stop after finishing it.

I was asking in a help channel and yet I was told to use my hotkey for each wreck... it's been a while playing but I never recalled doing it for every wreck. Ty for the clarification I'll try that next time.

Your drones will automatically salvage all wrecks within drone control range as long as the following conditions are met:

1) If no targets are locked

2) If targets are locked and your currently selected/active one is not a wreck (red crosses, for example). You can have 1 NPC and 9 wrecks locked but, as long as the NPC is the active target when you press the hotkey, your drones will still auto salvage wrecks automatically.
