Opinions on droneboats

As a newbie who is currently training to fly droneboats with the goal of flying an ishtar with the understanding it is one of the best drone boats in the game, is this still a sound strategy with the nerf?

I realize there are no right or wrong answers when it comes to ships usually but I am curious about yall's opinion.

The ishtar is still viable in PvP and PvE. As versatile and over powered as before? Nope, but still viable.

In regards to the Ishtar, I think it largely depends on what your goals are in EVE and how patient you're willing to be (Sentry IIs take a while).

As for your original question, good drone skills are invaluable in just about every combat situation in the game (PVE or PVP) and as has been mentioned, there are other very fine drone boats beside the Ishtar. So, as a general answer to your generic question, yeah, drone ships are very cool and fun to fly. My follow up is, what do you intend to do with the Ishtar once you get it trained? PVE? PVP? Exploration?

Then Ishtar. Gila is viable too. Not a Rattlesnake.

Don't dismiss the VNI, especially since you can get them at a discount with your LPs if you stick to FW for a while.

Ishtar. This is Ishtars Online. Can solo any faction any 10/10 Plex or any other dungeon, mission or instance while semi-AFK with 101% efficiency... while using a shield tank that is superior to any Minmatar boat - Gallente the prime master shield race /confirmed. Nanoggaf most ships solo, project 750 DPS to 100km without even fitting for it. Get jammed and laugh at it. Get neuted and... You're never neuted. Set orbit to 27km, buy Republic Fleet Disruptor and make coffee while rekking. Fit oversized 100MN AB, full tank and 3 damage mods, then moonwalk out of any hairy situation. Fitting Warp Core Stabs is an option - With increased locking times, you'll simply enjoy the soothing travel trajectory of your ship, as you enter orbit, gently. Enemy fleet switched doctrine ships? Not a problem, pick another sentry set during your morning breakfast. Zealots and Eagles smoke sentry fire, as they look for a nearby University to purchase a Gallente Cruiser skillbook. Scrap that - no one flies those since 2006. Track frigates with medium and heavy drones like there's no tomorrow. Transversshuuul, radiul orc/second, what? Leave that to the turret peasants. Unlike missiles, drones always catch you. Practically. Gila wished it could be an Ishtar, but it can't. Stratios is an Ishtar in reverse, thus not an Ishtar. VNI has more sentry DPS than an Ishtar, but Ishtar is an Ishtar, hence VNI can't have more sentry DPS than an Ishtar.

Working as intended.

Now, I may be overdosed on boosters, but Ishtar is seen crystal-klear.

Also forgot to mention the secret Ishtar Mafia that is attempting to thwart creative forces at every turn.

Well, I'd recommend not thinking about drone cruisers for a while. As OP as people think the Ishtar/Gila/Rattlesnake are, lowsec and especially FW space is dominated by small-gang / fleet warfare, and as soon as someone spies a shiney cruiser, you're garunteed to get blobbed.

Gallente drone boat progression goes as follows: Tristan > Fed Navy Comet > Algos > Vexor > Navy Vexor > Myrmadon > Ishtar > Dominix > Navy Domi > Sin > Thanatos > Nyx.

And since 90% of lowsec combat is in frigates and destroyers, I'd suggest you get really good with the Tristan and occasionally the Algos before moving up in ship size. Alturnatively, the Amarr have a few drone boats that are OK, but inferior to their Gallente counterparts.

Hope that helps!

Plan right now is to get ship mastery IV or V on the tristan than move up to algos or ishtar.

OP, Your plan sounds fine.

With the recent nerfbat, I think they may have hammered the Ishtar down a bit, but it still may not be enough for the other HACs, or God forbid BCs, to once again get their day in the sun (remembers long ago such things as Welpcanes and PODLA Drakes...). So even with the nerd, I'm not sure if we've arrived at a place where Iroquoiss' comments are off the mark. And so, you'll probably be pretty happy to have trained one up barring another round of CCP Nerfbat.

im kinda lazy so drones suit my play style quite well
that makes my opinion heavily biased towards droneboats being a very good thing

the changes made to some of the npcs do mean you have to watch whats happening a little more
light drones are targeted much less frequently than medium drones, heavy drones and sentries are targeted the most frequently

as the only destructible weapon system in the game (excluding pos guns) they are still very easy to use
an extra bonus is most droneboats are much more versatile than other platforms

as for pvp, whats best really depends on what your going to be shooting at
for some things a drone boat will be awesome, for others it can be a disadvantage
