Wow, I think this guy accidentally trained Paranoia to 6, you're only supposed to train that to 5 to be successful in EVE.

i cant see anyone being nice or helpfull anymore

There's just as many helpful (and not) players in Eve as there are in any other MMO. The issue is that here, the not helpful people can actually come after you directly, for their own profit and/or amusement, without breaking game rules.

It is a shame that there are pretty limited reprecussions for being untrustworthy. Gankers can't autopilot, mine, mission, rat in highsec anymore (probably on an alt that they only trained specifically to be a suicide ganker, at that), the horror! Corp thieves are shunned on that one character by the few people who learn about and remember the theft, but someone who just stole 50b+ doesn't give a crap because they've got isk for dozens of plex now to pay for their other accounts or new accounts (perhaps to repeat the cycle). Ingame scammers obviously are successful enough that they keep at it with little/no intervention from CCP.

Seems like CCP doesn't want to try to balance risk v reward of these kinds of emergent activities. Or maybe that they just don't have the balance right yet. Or maybe that it's just not possible to keep everyone happy.

On the other hand, there are quite a few corporations that exist solely to be helpful to players, especially new players. Those corps may be infiltrated by the not helpful players sometimes, and they may have turnover in their leadership, and stuff like that, but on the whole those places are excellent spots for players to find helpful folk. OP needs to temper his paranoia with a dose of faith and he should be fine. Being too paranoid OR too trusting, either one is trouble in Eve.

People do love to play the badass in this game (perhaps even more so on the forums), because being the badass is often more fun than being the good guy. It's also the lazy option. But who can blame them. It's the tales of scams and skulduggery that attract many to EVE. This game doesn't get sold on the idea that you can be Space Jesus if you so desire.

Trust always carries a risk. If it's a risk you're not willing to take then New Eden will be a lonely place for you.

That's the trick though. That risk, if you're talking about real life perhaps, is big for the unscrupulous person too. Someone doesn't marry you just to earn your trust and make off with your saving's account balance without exposing himself to a massive risk of being caught and thrown in prison for a decade.

In Eve, someone can perpetrate the equivalent offense (infiltrating a corporation, going the extra mile for a few months to earn trust, then cleaning out the corp assets) with an alt that exists solely for that purpose, so that there are basically no reprecussions for the act and the only risk the player runs is not pulling off the heist successfully and the loss of the time he spent towards that end not being used for some other activity.

Honestly i don't see this as a problem, it creates awesome stories of spies and commitment to a goal beyond enemy lines.

Remember, eve is not a kids game. Eve is not full of rainbows and ponies running on a green grass field. Eve is infact a dark place where you need to be careful who you actually call a friend, but when you do, it usually leads to an actual friendship (Best ship plz nerf).

It's only the red-haired, big-boobed girls that are after yah. Everybody else is cool.
(I know that's 90% of the player base, but sh*t happens!)

Hes not trolling. Ive heard this from countless people through the years. Its just the way some people wire themselves in this game.

To be honest....its the very reason i come back to this game. The fear factor some folks take seriously just adds to the imersion.

Destiny always seems decades away, but suddenly it's not decades away; it's right now. But maybe destiny is always right now, right here, right this very instant, maybe.

Never been scammed
Only been suicide ganked once in an empty pod ( I live on Open PVP areas and mostly operate out of highsec)
Frequently Autopilot (most time in highsec am AFK. I don't know where this "highsec is less safe than null comes from)
Only had 1 Awoxer in a corp who died to our carebear fleet

...

My experience is really different than yours.

"highsec is less safe than nullsec"

Only really true if you're a criminal. You should come to lowsec, I'll show you around; no, don't bring that shuttle, bring your shiny mission running ship, those rats can hit pretty hard, don't want to get your pod scuffed......

Sounds like you just had bad luck, very few people actually scam or do bad things. The inconvenient truth about EVE is that 99% of players are just as boring and unremarkable inside of the game as they are outside of it.

I get to be the 1%!!! Woot.
I am far more boring and unremarkable outside the game than I am in it.
Pretty boring and unremarkable inside it as well.
Usually.
Sometimes.
Mostly?

Ha. Just because "it's not against the rules", doesn't change the fact anyone who is dishonest, underhanded, larcenous or otherwise untrustworthy isn't suddenly imbued with positive qualities while engaging in these activities.
What planet are you from?

If you do something dishonest, you're dishonest. If you do something underhanded, you're underhanded. If you do something larcenous, you're larcenous. If you are untrustworthy, read it and weep. This is "the smartest thing Satan did was convince us he doesn't exist" at its best...

"Just because I'm a complete jerk in a game that allows it doesn't make me a complete jerk."

BWAAA HAAAA HAAAAA!!! Really. Who do you expect to believe this, your next victim?

The right to free speech doesn't automatically carry with it the right to be taken seriously.

I find this is a platitude that doesn't withstand scrutiny.

Allow me to repeat myself ad nauseum. "THE FIRST RULE OF EVE IS TRUST NO ONE."

Now, has anyone HEARD THAT BEFORE???? Wait. Wait. We're playing stupid here.

NOOOOOO, Serene. I've NEVER heard THAT before! Who would SAY such a thing, HUH????
