If SP isn't important...

SP doesn't matter in that it only limits you to roles.

low sp (sub 2mill)= ewar frigate/tackle frigate pilot. Now its important to understand that in small gang warfare at any SP level these guys are gods. Good combat tacklers/ewar pilots literally make or break your gang and enable it to engage way above its weight. So sure a newbie can be stuck in a maulus because the concept is easy right? 4 years later you find yourself still flying that Maulus because you are in a 4 man pirate frig gang and they need the kiting damp support.

Low sp (2-10mill) = You've probably got a cruiser and maybe a t2 frig/dessie hull going on with some mediocre support skills. Now you can fly anti support and even a bit of dps in certain cruiser hulls. Again, high sp pilots still rate these guys highly. specifically anti-support pilots. If you have 10mill sp and can fly the NOMEN (as an example) like a beast then you are welcome with 80mill sp pilots all day long.

Med sp (10mill+) = now you branch out to your first niche. Most always go T2 cruisers simply because of versatility in pvp and pve. Afterwhich niche options are yours to choose. Logi/recons/HACS all are welcome somewhere and again its not really sp limiting you here. High sp pilots will often fly this level ship as bread and butter.

High level sp (20mill+) = this isn't actually high, but for the purposes of a newb 40 mill means you can now fly a good selection of ships. This is where high sp shines. you can sleect a ship for an occasion rather than just bringing what you can fly. You can tailor your response to threats and your corpmates know you can fly to suit the occasion.

At no point in eve is any tier of ship useless. A t1 ewar frig or tackler has been the death of many a bitter vet. It does mean though that you won't be welcome in certain alliances/corps simply because of your experience levels, not your sp. Your SP defines your in game experience in most cases.

Basically, a newbie in a low sp ship is a liability to most high experience l33t corps unless you don't mind them dieing over and over and factor that into your plans (basically they become fodder). This is unlikely because of killboard efficency. A high experience player in a low sp ship though can be a very powerful thing so you'll often see guys with 80mill sp in a firetail.

What's important though is chat to recruiters, if the recruiter is a pvper then they should be able to guage if a low sp guy is actually going to be capable or not. In my travels I have met many low sp guys significantly more capable than guys that have played for years. You just have to chat to them.

This. Higher SP just make your character more versatile.

Fastest way to play the game is to jump into fac war and fly ships in anger. There are tons of great corps and alliances who like having new blood. Even if it is unenriched low SP blood cause they can fly Hero Tackle!
