Also, are there any effects to avoid ie Blackholes, or any which are particularly useful? Any advice would be great. Cheers.

Blackholes are the equiv of skating rinks and I've been seeing a lot of empty ones.

Med towers suck unless faction, even then, though you could drop one in first, and upgrade at another moon later on, maybe even keeping both up. Large Amarr or Caldari (faction if you can, less fuel, beefier) fits can be found in the forums.

And Strontium ;)
You wouldn't be the first one getting his POS destroyed by a bored roaming Gang when you use a small or medium tower, just because you forget to put Strontium in the tower. Lol

My suggestion would be a c2 with a HS and c1 static. Those are less occupied and would still yield the type of content that you are looking for. The main disadvantage for you is that there will be more stuff for you to keep your eye and years on or it will represent higher risk if you are running sites blindly.

if he really intends to do this solo a C1 is better for him if he just starts! Enough content for 1 player, as C1s seldomly these days only have their static. And in a C2 he has 1 addition static he has to care for.

I would strongly recomment a C1. If you are confident take a C1 with low-sec static as lowsec can provide you more additional and valuable content when wormhole is not giving you anything. In addition low-sec wormholes are less frequented than hiSec wormholes.

Thanks for the recent responses, all really useful stuff!

Just a little update to say that I came across an unoccupied C1 (HS) and bit the bullet (before some of the latter replies to this thread). I decided I'd just suck it up and put up a large tower. So far, it's been going well but still early days - I'm learning a hell of a lot, managing to get some isk in by running sites and even managing to solo gank the occasional gas miner or relic site runner. I'm sure it won't be long before I get my ass spanked by someone bigger and scarier but I guess that'll be another learning experience!

On reflection, I would have to say that I agree with what many have said about going for a C2 C1 static. Sites are running out pretty quickly, although I have been lucky to have a few connections to other C1 and C2 holes. I'm now thinking of looking into solo PVP ships that can deal with battlecruiser and T3 site runners that wander in - I'm currently using a frigate for PVP which wouldn't stand much of a chance :) I'm considering an NOmen, maybe an Abso or whether I should look into a Legion. As I'm not a natural PVP-er I'm researching these ships and whether they would be viable.

All round; I'm glad I'm giving it a go, don't know how long I'll last, whether through boredom or eviction but I'll make hay while the sun shines! Thanks again for everyone's feedback and advice!

I would not go with a T3 for solo pvp until you know what you are doing and are confiden/competent in its uset. Baiting is common practice and losing a t3 is painful. To start with my choice would be a svipul and if you want to take on bigger things move up to a pirate cruiser. The gila is hellish and the orthrus can point from halfway across the grid without boosts.
